Pinnacles National Park (West Entrance)

  • Feb 16, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Pinnacles National Monument

This is a loop that begins at the Chaparral Ranger Station (West Pinnacles entrance) parking lot...We start with Juniper trail and over to the reservoir, joining the Cholone Peak trail. After lunch at the top of North Cholone Peak we will return to the reservoir area then head down to the Bear Gulch area. Those who wish to traverse the caves, bring a flashlight. Also, if rains have been recent, shoes may get wet so prepare accordingly. After resting at Bear Gulch Visitor Center we will head up the Condor Gulch trail. At the intersection with the Bench Trail we will turn left on to the High Peaks Trail then back to the parking lot via Juniper Trail.

Some of you can shorten your hike to 9 miles by....heading down to the Bear Gulch area directly from the reservoir then up Condor Gulch then Juniper trail. Should you take this route consider your carpool friends.

Meeting Location: West Entrance at the trailhead parking area. As you enter, you will see the new Chaparral Ranger Station. There is a $5.00 (?) (now a National Park) entrance fee at this point. Continue 2 miles or so to the parking area (old Ranger Station location) We will meet here.

I really enjoyed this hike, the weather was perfect and the view from North Cholone Peak was nice. Thanks Ted for organizing and giving us different options what to hike.

Looks like I will need to do a hike closer to home on Saturday. Sorry I will miss this one.

    February 12, 2013

Not to cause disruption to Ted's hike but if we have enough time and energy would anybody be interested in continuing to South Chalone? I believe it's additional 3.2 mile round trip on an unmaintained trail so a total mileage for the hike would be around 18 or so. Just a suggestion.
