Royal Gorge Cross Country Skiing

Let's take our hiking out onto the snow.  Royal Gorge is a premier cross country ski resort with great trails for both beginners and those with advanced skills.

Half day passes are available at 12:30.  I would like to meet at 12 so that everyone can get geared up and ready to go.  Equipment is available at the resort but can also be found in equipment rental places in town.

Cross country skiing is very easy to learn but difficult to sustain.  You must be able to sustain a high heart rate for hours.  I am creating a wait list as I must be personally confident that you can sustain this effort.

I will be happy to demonstrate how to put on and take off the equipment.  I will also be able to show you how to ski in the tracks and how to turn around.  This should be enough to get you through your first day.  If you want to learn more, Sunday can be for more advanced lessons available at the resort.

You will need to bring the same type of gear that you would for a long hike; sunscreen, sunglasses (it gets very glarey), water and snacks for a 3-4 hour effort.

It will be a blast.

This will be cancelled if there is a blizzard, no snow, closed highways etc.

Housing must be ranged individually.

I want to thank everybody again for making this such a special event; experienced skiiers helped others and everyone was so welcoming...couldn't have asked for a better group to play with.

For those of you staying at Claire Tappan on Friday night, dinner is served at 6:00. I'll hang out in that comfy room by a fireplace at 5:30 if anyone wants to join me.

I am going to read these a little bit more closely. I thought this was just a ski trip for skiers. This would have been a blast to have tried. Next time for sure.
    Stay safe everyone.

    :)

I looked at the website for the Lodge. That looks like so much fun. Is it close to where we start? I may stay at my friends house on Friday night in Roseville then drive up early Saturday morning, stay at the Lodge on Saturday night. Very excited.

I will be staying at the Claire Tappan Lodge (built in the 1930's). The rates are very reasonable and food is included but you do need to bring your own sleeping bag. It might not be the type of place for everybody but check it out on-line.

Kathleen, I definitely have a place to stay. My son lives in Grass Valley or I may opt to stay at Clair Tappan. It has always been on my list to try, as well as the cross country skiing. Thanks, I'm really looking forward to this adventure!

To those who have been moved to the "going" list, by 12/28/12, please confirm that you have lodging reservations. If you don't have them by then, we will give some one else a chance to go. Thanks.

If you haven't X country skiied before, here are some clothing guidelines...snow pants or jeans with "gators"; water proof gloves, layers on top so that if you get warm from the activity, you can tie your jacket/sweater around your waist (i uusually end up with just a t-shirt after an hour), thick socks and a hat. Sunscreen is a must and some sort of lip gloss helps too. You will need a camel back or small pack for water and snacks. This activity can burn up to 1000 calories an hour. I don't discourage MP3 players because we will have to have 3 to 4 feet between each of us as we travel and talking is difficult....just some stuff to think about!
