The first hike of the Fall season will take us to Garrapata State Park's Rocky Ridge Trail, a local favorite that is guaranteed to get you sweating and your heart pumping! The round-trip distance is just over 3 miles but very rapidly ascends 1,500 feet to the famous bench overlooking the sea before turning around and heading back. Provided that our usual coastal stratus abates during the late afternoon into the evening hours, we'll be treated to breathtakingly beautiful coastal views high above Hwy 1 and the Carmel Highlands as we traverse our way up and back down the Rocky Ridge Trail.
DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:
Garrapata State Park is seven miles south of Carmel Valley Road, off Highway 1 in Carmel. There?s a highway turnout at mileage marker 65.8. MapQuest Driving Directions from Carmel to Garrapata State Park
From the gate on the east side of Highway 1, walk inland over a dirt road to a nearby barn, then a wee bit farther to cross Soberanes Creek and reach a trail junction. Soberanes Canyon heads east along the creek, but Rocky Ridge-bound hikers will keep with the closed road, heading north and dipping in and out of a gully.
Hikers rapidly leave the highway behind as the path climbs the rugged slopes, which are dotted with black sage, golden yarrow and bush lupine. The route uses few switchbacks as it ascends 1,435-foot Rocky Ridge. From atop the ridge are good views to the east of Soberanes Creek watershed, to the west of Soberanes Point, and to the north of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula. -Source: www.parks.ca.gov
THIS WILL BE A VERY STRENUOUS HIKE SO PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR THIS. WE WILL BE CLIMBING AT AN AVERAGE GRADIENT BETWEEN 20%-30% FOR NEARLY 1 MILE. SO PLEASE MATCH YOUR CURRENT FITNESS & CONDITIONING WITH THE DEGREE OF STRENUOUSNESS THAT THIS HIKE WILL ENTAIL.
TRANSPORTATION & CARPOOL LOGISTICS
I will offer a carpool to anyone interested in making the short journey between Carmel and the trail head location. Anyone interested in either riding with me or joining another carpool please plan on meeting up at 5:45 p.m. at the Carmel Park & Ride lot at the Carmel Crossroads shopping center near Hwy 1 and Rio Road. Carpools will leave the Crossroads promptly at 6 p.m. If you prefer to drive directly to the trail head please plan on getting there NO later than 6:15 p.m.
Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this. For more information regarding safety, please refer to the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group "About" section for more details.
