Announcing a new Meetup for The Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group!

What: Buzzard's Roost Trail, Big Sur (~5 Miles, ~1,000 Feet)

When: Thursday, December 23, 2010 9:30 AM

Where: Carmel Crossroads
CA Hwy 1 @ Rio Road
Carmel, CA 93922

For anyone fortunate enough to have the day off from work tomorrow (Thursday, December 23rd), or if you're simply looking for something fun & interesting to do (while getting some beneficial exercise), consider doing a hike to Big Sur's famed Buzzard's Roost Trail.

Looks like sunny, drier weather is on the way for Thursday this week. What better way to spend a day off from work than to hike along the famed Buzzard's Roost Trail in beautiful Big Sur. This beautiful trail traces a succession of biological habitats typical of a Big Sur hillside, from riparian woodland, through old-growth redwood forest and oak woodland, and on the heavy chaparral of Pfeiffer Ridge. The ocean and mountain views from Buzzard's Roost would be exceptional anywhere else, though for Big Sur they are just ordinarily exceptional.

HIKE SUMMARY:
Meetup Location: Carmel Crossroads (Hwy 1 & Rio Road)
Start Time: 9:30 a.m.
Hike Duration: 2 to 4 hours
Pace: Moderate (2 to 2.5 mph)
Total Distance: ~5 miles
Total Elevation Gain: ~1000 feet
Difficulty: Moderate for Distance, Challenging for Distance

THIS WILL BE A MODERATELY STRENUOUS HIKE due to a total distance of just under 5 miles. This will NOT be a speed hike and we will take time to enjoy the workout and the views of the changing topography on our way up to Pfeiffer Ridge.

WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, wind & rain gear, lunch/snack, hat, gloves, 2-3 liters of water, long pants and long sleeve shirt (for poison oak protection).

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Reasonably fit and well conditioned hikers who can handle a 5-mile hike on single-track trail over moderately steep terrain.

THIS WILL BE A TEAM HIKING EFFORT WHICH MEANS WE WILL STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP.

DIRECTIONS:
Parking is extremely limited so WE WILL BE CARPOOLING TO THE TRAIL HEAD. For carpool setup and other arrangements, let's meet at the park-n-ride lot at the Carmel Crossroads shopping center near the corner of Rio Road and Hwy 1 at 9:30 a.m. From there we will carpool together for the approximately 30-40 minute drive to the trail head.

RESPONSIBILITY:
Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this. For more information regarding safety, please refer to the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group "About" section for more details.
