Announcing a new Meetup for The Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group! What
: Ventana Series: Cabezo Prieto Ridge (~13 Miles, ~4,500 Feet)When
: Saturday, February 19,[masked]:00 AMWhere
: Andrew Molera State Park
Big Sur, CA 93920
Always a perennial favorite, the Cabezo Prieto Ridge which lies above the Big Sur river valley and connects Post Summit
(elevation 3,455 feet) to Manuel Peak
(elevation 3,379 feet), offers stunningly beautiful vistas of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the unspoiled, rugged interior of the Ventana Wilderness to the east. With this year's abundant rainfall resulting in high water flowing through the creeks (and thereby making river crossings potentially impassable), the winter season is simply the BEST time to hike the hidden ridges of the Big Sur back country, and the Cabezo Prieto Ridge is quintessentially the MOST scenic of them all in the Big Sur!
Location: Andrew Molera State Park
GPS Coordinates: Lat:[masked], Lon: [masked]
Start Time: 9:00 a.m.
Hike Duration: 8 to 10 hours
Pace: Moderate (2.5 to 3 mph)
Total Distance: ~13 miles
Total Elevation Gain: ~4,500 feet
Difficulty: Challenging for Distance, Cumulative Elevation Gain
Our route will take us from our starting point at the East Molera Ridge Trail which will take us up steeply towards Molera Ridge and beyond to Post Summit (elevation 3,455 feet). We'll continue on beyond Post Summit as we traverse the Cabezo Prieto Ridge which in some areas is off-trail and will require some negotiation through overgrown brush and steep inclines. We'll reach our second summit atop Manuel Peak before the trail descends quickly towards Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. It is along this final stretch of trail where we'll be treated to gorgeous views of the Big Sur river gorge scenic area.
PORTIONS OF THIS HIKE WILL BE VERY STRENUOUS
due to a challenging trail route that will take us up and down very steep slopes, particularly along the stretch between Molera Ridge and Post Summit which is along a fairly well-graded fire road. WHAT TO BRING:
Sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, wind & rain gear, lunch, hat, gloves, 4-6 liters of water, long pants and long sleeve shirt (for poison oak protection). Bring your trekking polls if you have them as there may be steep inclines & declines.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Very fit, disciplined hikers who can handle a 13 mile hike over steep/rough terrain. HOW TO ATTEND:
You must have appropriate hiking experience to qualify for attendance. Members who do NOT have appropriate hiking experience should consider attending another event.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS HIKE:
Hike will commence at posted start time. Hike will average speed between 2 to 2.5 mph. There will be some negotiation and/or bushwhacking on unstable & STEEP ground so solid hiking boots and conditioned feet are required for this event! Additionally, we will be traversing through areas that will likely include POISON OAK. It would be unwise to attend this hike without: long pants (or pants with removable legs), hat, gloves, long sleeve shirt due to poison oak & all the other bushes we will have to pass through. Trekking poles are also recommended.THIS WILL BE A TEAM HIKING EFFORT WHICH MEANS WE WILL STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP. WE WILL BE HIKING THROUGH AREAS OF VASTLY REMOTE WILDERNESS AND FOR SAFETY REASONS WE WILL MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE HIKE.
We will meet at Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur. From Carmel proceed south on CA-1 for approximately 21.5 miles until you reach the main entrance to Andrew Molera State Park. Limited free parking is available on the west side of the highway about 1/4 mile past the park's main entrance. Parking is also available inside the state park for a $10/day (vehicle fee).
MapQuest driving directions and map can be found here: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/9-DuFdvNqPPOINT-TO-POINT LOGISTICS:
Since we will be starting our hike at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park (which is approximately 3.5 miles down the highway from our starting point) we'll need to coordinate amongst ourselves to leave cars at both ends in order to have transportation back to our starting point at the conclusion of the hike. Arrangements will be coordinated upon arriving at our meetup location on the day of the hike.
Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this. For more information regarding safety, please refer to the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group "About" section for more details.
