Portal Rock, Big Sur

  • Bank of America parking on the corner of Hwy 1 and Rio Road, Carmel
  • PLEASE NOTE: START TIME HAS CHANGED

I've changed our meeting time to begin at 2:00. We can count on a big crowd at this shoot and parking might get a litle slim. So we should meet a little early, car pool / caravan and stake out our places on the beach.

Let's shoot the Portal Rock at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur. Looks like the solstice will occur on Dec 21 Let's target Sat, Dec 22. Pray that the fog will not come in.

During the winter months, the sun aligns through the "Portal" and if you catch the splashes just right, the back lit water appears to be on fire. The last 3 times I've gone, the beach was so crowded with photogs, it was challenging to claim a spot. This is becoming quite the popular shot to capture. I think it's a good idea to get there as early as possible to claim a spot. Pack a sandwich, something to drink and dont forget to bundle up. It'll be chilly!

We'll meet at 2:00 in the Bank of America parking lot on the corner of Rio Road at Hwy 1 and hit the road promptly at 2:15. We'll caravan/carpool down to the beach to arrive before sunset (just before 5:00) and keep our fingers crossed that the fog doesnt roll in.

After the shoot, let's grab a bite to eat in Big Sur or Carmel before heading home.

Well, I actually went to the beach; no rain at all the entire way down. There were 4 or 5 other photogs with DSLR's & tripods, along with about 15-20 others enjoying the beach and wondering what we were trying to shoot.

Since it was so overcast and I didn't think there'd be any sunset rays through the portal, I decided to play with long exposures with a Lee Big Stopper, meaning to convert to b&w. Low, fast-moving clouds should look good. In the middle of one shot the sun actually peaked through; there was a beam through the portal for maybe 30 seconds or so, not very long. Pink rays lighting up the clouds above the arch lasted longer, and showed up well in that one shot.

Even it is not raining, is sun visible or just overcast gloomy weather? That's what it is in South Bay / East Bay. On other hand, it is expected to be White Christmas in Yosemite.

hi art, i may be willing, depends on what happens as the day progresses. linda

Everyone ready to rock the rock? Unless the weatherman forecasts rain at 50% chance or more, it's still on. Dont forget to bring your rain sleeves (aka ziplock bags) and tripod. And yes, you can find premade rainsleeves for camera online. Dress for chilly weather.

    December 20, 2012

    • Paul H

My TWC app says 90% chance, but I'll probably be there anyway. I've literally driven into Big Sur through rain and a but of sleet one afternoon and got lucky enough to experience a fantastic sunset. And that reminds me I bought one of those rain sleeves a long time ago because it was on sale...need to dig that up!

      December 20, 2012

    • Sheri R.

ok here is my cell in case there is a cancelation and Im driving to carmel to wait for everyone...209-[masked] I really want to go so keeping fingers crossed the rain with stay north of us, so call or text me if plans change please, ty

Sorry, I'm backing out. Have had a bad cold and wet cold weather makes me feel much worse. :( Will miss all of you!!! Wishing you a good shoot and Happy Holidays!

For those worried about rain, showers, etc. a one gallon zip loc bag works great. make 2 slits-one near each corner of the bottom of the bag for the straps to go through and pull the bag down over camera and lens. DO NOT ZIP up the bag, it will cause condensation on your lens. i used it on an alaskan cruise and it worked great.

    December 17, 2012

    • Glenn F.

Hey Linda, I was just about to suggest the zip loc bag, as well. Also, I really like using the stiff plastic bags that comforters are packaged in. Since they are zippered, they won't work for heavier rain, but I do like the roominess of 'em.

I'm still planning to go to the Portal on Dec 20 to do a preshoot. I have room to ride share. 1) I hope to beat the crowds, 2) make a pre-strike in case of fog -you never know) 3) shoot from different locations than my previous visits. Anyone game to join me? On Saturday, please be sure to check in with me at Bank of America parking lot. If you aren't positive you can make it, please indicate now before I print out the attendance list. I'm making a list, checking it twice. Gonna find out who's naughty or nice.

Because we have such a large group it's imperative that we carpool. Parking is going to be a challenge. This is a very popular shoot and folks from across the country will be there. We can expect the beach to be very crowded, elbow to elbow. No kidding.

With all of that in mind, arrive at our meeting point EARLY to get acquainted, gossip and coordinate your ride share. We leave at 2:15 on the dot! At 2:16 you're on your own.

Michelle, I'm planning on being down the coast shooting before hand, so I'll plan on meeting you guys there. If something changes I'll call/text.

just making sure that you got my note that i do want to ride with you for the preshoot on thurs. thanks linda

It's been my experience (living in the Monterey area for 40 years) that when they forecast rain for a particular day, it rains a bit at night, then the rest of the day is clear and sunny. Well, if the weather does clear, there could be very clear, crisp skies and possibly some great clouds, too!!!
If nothing else, we could all go have a nice dinner.

    December 17, 2012

    • Sheri R.

so what is preferred to use on the camara for protection from the rain? Dinner sounds wonderful and something warm to drink :)

      December 17, 2012

    • art f.

You can go a variety of ways...buying stuff designed for wet weather or using something as simply as a hotel plastic shower cap with elastic and a hole in the center to allow for a lens. Unless you get a massive downpour, this is enough to protect most camera bodies.

      December 17, 2012

  • Paul H

That's what I'm hoping for, nice dramatic clouds for sunset. I've never managed to catch the arch with nice clouds over it.

    December 17, 2012

  • Joolz H.

Weather Underground says 50% chance of rain. I find them to be more accurate for our area than weather.com. They certainly were yesterday! :) I guess we'll see what happens.

    December 17, 2012

  • Glenn F.

Hey Michelle, where and when can we meet for the preshoot?

    December 16, 2012

    • Michelle K.

Preshoot looks like good weather. Meet by 2:00 at Bank of America on Rio Road. With Rio Road to your back I will somewhere to the left of the bank. Grey, Toyota Sienna mini van, no license plates yet. Just says Santa Cruz Motors.

      December 17, 2012

  • Paul H

Looks like the forecast is rain Saturday, but I also know how unpredictable the weather there can be...any thoughts beyond playing it by ear?

    December 17, 2012

    • Sheri R.

I am prayin for no rain, GRRRR Thursday says rain too andother GRRR, lol

      December 17, 2012

    • Michelle K.

the forecast is for 30% chance of shower on Saturday. It can change between now and then too. I say if it looks like 30% or less, we could try it. Be sure to wear rain gear and to bring something to protect your camera in the case of a sudden sprinkles. If we're lucky we there could be some dramatic clouds in the background.

      December 17, 2012

  • Sheri R.

Ok I could use a ride there since I have never been there before, I don't know who still has an open seat but I am willing to kick in a few bucks for gas :) please let me know whos got a seat...Thank you so much and can't wait to do this...also my understanding id were meeting at 2pm at bank of america, I will be there alittle early

    December 16, 2012

    • Michelle K.

Sheri, you can ride along wihtme if you want. When we meet at the Bank of America, we'll condense into fewer cars. See you there!

      December 16, 2012

  • art f.

All: I will be driving down to Portal Rock. There are 4 spots available in my SUV. I am happy to carpool with folks. However, I am thinking my departure will 30 minutes earlier from the Chevron Station...parking is at a major premium at the shot location. Anyway message me if you want to car pool...I just ask for gas money. :D

    December 16, 2012

    • Michelle K.

I'd like to ask that anyone riding with you let me know so I dont stand around waiting for folks that have already gone As you said parking will be at a premium and I want to hit the road as close to "on time" as possible. Besides knowing who is riding along wiht you, I'll want to know names so I can be sure to mark them as "attended". I wouldnt want to mark attendees as absent. Can you let me know who your riders are via text just before you depart? Thanks.

      December 16, 2012

    • Linda A.

Art, If you still have room for Portal Rock, I would like to ride with you. Thanks, Linda

Sorry to say I won't be able to make this one. Xmas is getting in the way!!

    December 16, 2012

  • Linda A.

I will be at portal rock and can drive or ride to limit the # of cars. if you still have room, michelle, i will join you. also, i would like to be at the pre-shoot and can go both the 21st and the 22 if that works with the group.

    December 11, 2012

  • Sheri R.

I will be there on Saturday, would like to car pool with someone since I haven't been there before, I wil get to the bank about 1:45

    December 11, 2012

Michelle, I would love to join you for the pre-shoot at portal if there is room linda

    December 11, 2012

I have ordered the xtra battery and wireless shutter release, hoping to have them before the shoot, so darn excited about this and it was really nice meeting a few of you, everyone seems so nice! I am going to try and go to as many shoots as possible for my level

    December 10, 2012

    • Glenn F.

Good for you Sheri. Let us know if you want to get together for a quick runthrough with your camera.

Great meeting you too Sheri. Welcome to our merry little band of photo geeks. This is a great shoot.

Alternative 2: Because this shoot is so crowded and weather can be dicey, I am also going to do a pre-shoot down there on Friday 12/21. I would have joined Michelle the day before (Thursday) on her pre-shoot, but my work schedule isn't going to allow it.

The bet is that a Friday may not be as crowded, although it won't be peak light.

So, for folks that might be interested in joining me, please contact me directly. I will be offering a carpool and can carry 4 passengers in exchange for gas.

There you go, even more options.

Des anyone recall the name of the restraunt we ate at last year? Let me know when you check in if you wanna have dinner and I'll make a reservation before we hit the road.

    1 · December 11, 2012

    • art f.

Hey Michelle, last year it was just you and me & we didn't do a trip with this group. I know where we ate...I'll send it over via email.

      December 11, 2012

    • Michelle K.

I did a group shoot... Tom and Willa joined me at the restraunt inthe Carmel Valley SHopping center. I jsut dont recall thename.

      December 11, 2012

  • Paul H

Agreed, more than once I've had other photogs rudely get in front of me while I was shooting the portal. Even once when I was literally the only person shooting there until a group showed up. Fortunately most of the people that show up are courteous.

    December 11, 2012

  • art f.

Folks: Michelle is not kidding about crowds. This shoot is on of about 2 dozen spots in the world where several hundred photographers gather for just one shoot. It's like the Olympics for us...people are nice, but they take getting this shot seriously.

Arrive early at the rally point and get there early for parking. I'm seriously thinking of getting there even earlier for a good spot.

    December 11, 2012

  • Sheri R.

Im interested, although not that familar with my camara yet, I need practice, lots of it :) looking forward to meeting with all of you

Anyone intersted in joining me for a Pre-shoot visit? The solstice peak occurs on Fri Dec 21. You can bet the beach will be packed with photogs from all over the country. I'm thinking I might pre-scout on Thurs the 20th. Anyone game to join me?

    November 13, 2012

    • Joolz H.

Michelle, I might be interested and available for a scout trip.

      November 13, 2012

    • Michelle K.

Coolness Joolz. Let's make it happen. Gimme a call and let's car pool.

      November 13, 2012

  • Paul H

I've experienced bad crowds here too up to probably around 50 people last winter. Just checked on a couple of local photogs that do workshops there (Jim Patterson, Josh Cripps & Don Smith), and fortunately neither appears to be hosting a workshop that weekend, so that might help a little. I'll probably meet you guys at the beach, I'm guessing I'll already be in the area shooting.

Thanks Tom for the info. I would be interested any day prior to the 18th Michelle if that is viable. I fly out on the 18th.

Thanks for fielding a response to Jack on this shoot Tom. Jack if you google an aerial map of the location, you'll see that the portal rock has a long, horseshoe shape. The sun needs to align down a corridor of rock to send it's rays through the portal. Of course, you can visit the site on your own before or after our target date. It's a public beach afterall. But the light may not be at peak alighment. There is a big sand bank hill along the shoreline. You can try shooting the entire scene from that vantage point too. This may stretch your options. The biggest issue is fog... pray it doesnt' coem in at all. I've made the long drive a few time only to get fogged out. Bummer man.

    November 13, 2012

  • Tom

Jack -- Sorry you can make the trip with us in December. By January the sun will have started its move north and will not align as well with the keyhole at sunset which was the focus of this event. Pfeiffer is a great beach with plenty of other things to photograph which will make for a great trip in January.

Maybe another shoot at Pfeiffer in Jan since I will be away at Christmas. Anyone else can't make it but would be avail in Jan?
