"The progress that's made ... in any argument or in any discussion is by confrontation. That's a dialectical fact. People say "oh let's have less heat and more light," fatuously. There's only one source of light. It happens to be heat. " (Christopher Hitchens)

At Graduate House on the second Thursday of the month we will hold a debate  at which invited speakers will express opposing views on a hot button issue.

The debate will be available afterwards as a podcast and there is the Message Board for further discussion.

The evening goes like this:

    Eating, drinking and mingling from 6.00;

    The debate goes from 7.00 to 8.00;

    We continue the discussion over a pub meal.

Attendance will not be confined to meetup group members and we have another web site which provides more details

The intention is for these evenings to put politics with a capital P back on the agenda, by encouraging a real clash of ideas and raising the political temperature.

Over the last several decades, we've seen the disappearance of productive and interesting political debate. Real politics involves engaging in serious (although hopefully entertaining) debate with people from different camps. It's also about really wanting to change things rather than simply taking a stance.

We hope to attract people who are prepared to argue things out with people from opposed political tribes and are not afraid to raise the political temperature.
