Introduction to The Motoring Enthusiast Group in California.

  • Jun 1, 2013 · 1:00 PM

The Motoring Enthusiast Group is originally based out of Maryland, as you might be able to tell from other postings.  But I (Harvey Duncan) will be starting the Modesto/Sacramento gatherings to head out to the roads of the Sierra Gold Country or even a few romps out in the coastal hills.

As an initial introduction, we'd be starting in Modesto from the Queen Bean, working out of downtown on 132 to Coulterville, where we can stop to eat at the Coulter Cafe.  From there we can head a few different directions on 49, but heading south would yield one of the best routes as we'd take "The Little Dragon."  Click here for a map.

The Little Dragon is a 13-14 mile stretch of canyon-carving that follows the Merced River/Lake McClure, crossing at Bagby Bridge, and then working up a to Fort Fremont where there's a wide pull-off to look back and appreciate the road just taken.

After The Little Dragon the group will drive through Hornitos where we can stop for the ruinsof the original Ghirardelli Chocolate factory in the nearly-deserted town, before heading back to LaGrange and turning west on 132 back to Modesto.

Starting points, times, and exact routing are still up for discussion.  Here's hoping to some good day trips in the future, and getting a bunch of fellow driving enthusiasts of all kinds together!

Yeah, I know. Josh usually likes pics taken. Also, sending you some tips for the RX8 cleaning, just in case.

Oh yes-- and after Tim left, I decided to give Guilherme an additional drive out of HWY 132 traffic on the way home: Crabtree and Wilms Rd. out to 120/108.

Everyone had an enthusiastic driving experience! Duncan picked out a challenginging drive along the edge of the Gold Country with a rest stop in the historic town of Coulterville. From there we headed along highway 49 to Mariposa. The pavement was excellent and traffic was light to non existent. My air conditioning pooped out but it usually does the first hot day in Spring Suncan also picked the right road for the tripinto Hornitos, an old ghost town and hangout of Poncho Villa when he was on the run.

I look forward to your coast drives, Tim. There's so much I'm missing over there, it'd be good to get to know another route... and have the challenge of playing catch-up.

My left wrist is soooo feeling it. Who knew a 464,600 mile (past 464,600 on the trip) Echo with original springs could hold so well. Hell, I drive it and was surprised. Lower unsprung weight via Miata alloys FTW!

I did get turned around a couple times, and there were a couple over-cooked bends, but otherwise a very good run-- not bad for a first group drive!

I'm down with Saturday for more people. Might see if anyone in the Alfa Romeo club might want to make a run out there.

What time would we be meeting in Modesto, in terms of best for y'all?

South East... ish. We'd run up 132, down 49, and then J16which indeed goes through Hornitos. There's a link to the map right above the pic of my Echo taking Highway 49 through there.

I never really stopped to look around Hornitos, other than the little store there to get some chips and a soda-- the small cans of Pringles fit just right in a cup-holder.

Are we driving anywhere or is thing to introduce ourselves to one another

Good question. I think it'd be an introduction just as much as a drive for fun. This would be my first meet up as a member altogether, not just an organizer.

I would bring my 96 Suburban but it needs new front brakes, down to bare metal. The driving in a group is the fun part. And remember, I'm an old guy with slower reflexes.

Jag is more than fine! Enjoy that V8 and drop-top. It's what, a 4.2L? Just guessing from what Jags tended to hold. I take the "Jag" approach, per Top Gear UK.

Oooohhhh... mine is so lame compared to anything you guys will bring! Haha. We won't be going fast, but my Echo is just so... hmm. Wasn't expecting XK8's and such. Still, rock on.
