Government Canyon (Mountain Bike) [Advanced]

We are meeting at Government Canyon for a Mountain Bike ride. We will ride the backcountry trails going up Joe Johnston trail and then going down the Sendero trail. That should be 3 hours.  Our pace will be between 7 and 12 mph.

There is a fee of 6.00 to enter the park unless you have an annual state park pass.  Helmet required.  Emphasis- Helmet required on all rides and bring 3 liters of water for yourself.

As with any park we mountain bike there are smooth parts and rocky parts and any part that makes you uncomfortable you can walk though it. Make sure you have water, sun block, and wear a helmet. When we ride we will have some rest stops along the way to let everyone catch their breath. I will only be there if there are people who RSVP "YES" by the RSVP deadline.

The back country trails require a lot of climbing and in some parts we have to walk our bikes up.

Meet at:

Look for the dark green mountain bike. I will probably be wearing black shorts and a blue shirt. We will meet at the visitor center close to the water tower and bathrooms.

Rain cancels this event.

The deadline to rsvp "Yes" for this meetup is the day before the meetup.

Make sure you have enough water for yourself. I carry about 3 liters worth of water for myself.

Did you guys go up Sendero or come down it from Joe Johnston?

    May 14, 2014

    • Enrique

We went up Sendero and then came back on Joe Johnston.

Very good ride. I liked how we all took turns leading the group. We cut 15 minutes from the expected time. The 26 did great. Good to see everyone.

That was intense! That sendero trail is no joke.

I'm running late. If I'm not there by the 10 minutes. I'll try to catch up.

Just to make sure but Sunday is mothers day. Your mom or your spouse may want you to hang around. If you need to update rsvp try to do it by 8:30am. I visited my parents Saturday.

29 is going to the bike shop for repairs. Should be ready in time. Will update on Saturday.

    • Cliff

Where did you take your bike for repair? Thanks

      May 9, 2014

    • Enrique

Planet Bike, or Bike City, or Performance Bike, or Ride Away Bicycles are all the bike shops I have gone to for different repairs.

After a quick inspection of my bike, I noticed my headshok fork is covered with grease/oil. It either the oil is coming from the upper headset bearing or fork but not sure. Will have to back out for tomorrow's ride.

No other scheduled ride this weekend so I am going to this one. Just like what Jesse said "it can be done". See you guys on Saturday!

    • Enrique

This ride is on Sunday. See you Sunday.

I'm interested, I haven't been to GC. What makes this ride advanced? Is it very technical or just physically strenuous?

    May 8, 2014

    • Enrique

Both. Very technical and strenuous. The speed might be intermediate.

Meet at about 10:15 by the visitor center. We start rolling at 10:30.

I go on my 26 hardtail. It's rough but can be done.

I don't know about your bike. I used to ride my specialized stumpjumper 26 in the back country years ago. I looked at your rsvp for past meetups and so far you have only done beginner. I recommend try Salado Intermediate before you try government canyon advanced. Salado is a good next step in terms of riding a rougher trail.

I was not criticizing your bike. I just don't have the equipment to do any x-rays or infrared stress tests on the material of your bike. (its humor-- I'm kidding....)

      1 · May 5, 2014

    • Cliff

You are right that I should try Salado before riding with the big boys. Thanks man!

      May 6, 2014

Not sure if my 26er Cannondale Super V can handle the back country. What do you think Enrique?

    May 5, 2014

  • Enrique

Moved from 5/12 to 5/11. Sunday.
