Flat Rock Ranch (Mountain Bike) [Intermediate]

  • Flat Rock Ranch

Flat Rock Road, Comfort, TX (map)

    29.996704 -98.879082

  • Look for the dark green bike in the parking area. I'll e-mail my cell# a day before the meetup.
  • A trip to flat rock ranch.  There is a lower and upper loop that converge at the entrance so we can do one or the other or both loops.  We will start with the lower loop which is about 15 miles.

This may be a higher level intermediate ride. There are plenty of smooth sections but it is not as flat as all the local parks we have gone to ride. The climbs can be pretty demanding but the downhills are really long, smooth and very nice.

You can prepay and download the waiver here but they have them at the entrance also and you can pay there.

    http://www.flatrockranch.net/daypasses.html

    Day pass is $7

EVERYONE MUST FILL OUT A WAIVER

Here is some of my usual stuff:

There are smooth parts and rocky parts and any part that makes you uncomfortable you can walk though it. Make sure you havewater (About 3 liters), sun block, some food, and wear a helmet. We will be riding for about 3 hours. When we ride we will have some rest stops along the way to let everyone catch their breath. I will only be there only if there are people who RSVP "YES" by the RSVP deadline. The deadline to rsvp is the day before the meetup.

    Rain cancels this event.

I will probably be wearing black shorts and a blue shirt. Look for the dark green mountain bike.

We will do the 15 mile loop first and then return to the entrance. Once you start the loop you are in it for the entire loop since there are no shortcuts or paved sidewalks to lead you back.  If we do both loops the ride adds up to about 27 miles.

Directions: Go north on I-10.  Exit and turn left on 87 (I usually take the second exit in town of Comfort-Look at map link).  Turn left on FM473.  Turn left on Flat Rock Creek Road.  Continue until the road ends and you will run straight into the gate and see the ranch sign. Open the gate and get in then close the gate.

Its not looking good at all. It rained a little yesterday and the McAllister trails got muddy. I think Flat rock ranch should be about the same. It rained a little earlier today and the streets are slick and the ground muddy again. Not much but enough for mud to stick to tires. Forecast on some websites has the rain chances even higher on Monday than today. Flat rock is tough when its dry and will be no fun when its muddy. I am going to cancel this one.

Everyone needs three liters of water. Once we are on the trail there are no refills.

Enrique...any idea of what pace will be like? how will it compare to Leon, Salado....etc?

I have not been out there before but have been wanting to try. Would rather try it with some folks rather than go it alone the first time. Endurance wise I'm pretty good. But if its a lot of tech plus endurance, then I might start slowing people down. If its smooth like Mac, then I likely will handle the climbs ok

You're in for a real treat. I can't say it compares to anything at Mac Leon or op. The climbs are tough and some of the gnarlier parts will seem overwhelming at first. I'm likely to walk a few so I wouldn't worry about pace.

I want to start scheduling this ride more often so we can get used to it. Sometimes on Mondays and other times on Sundays.

I vote Sunday please! I can go this Monday because of memorial day

I have not been out there but spoke to a friend who is a MTB Cat 1 racer this weekend who said it is a good mix of trails. If I recall right, she said the upper loop is a tougher loop. They put on a TMBRA race there in the Fall, I believe, so there would have to be some tough trails.
