Flat Rock Ranch (Mountain Bike) [Intermediate+]

A trip to flat rock ranch.  There is a lower and upper loop that converge at the entrance so we can do one or the other or both loops.  We will start with the lower loop which is about 15 miles.

This may be a higher level intermediate ride. There are plenty of smooth sections but it is not as flat as all the local parks we have gone to ride. The climbs can be pretty demanding but the downhills are really long, smooth and very nice.

You can prepay and download the waiver here but they have them at the entrance also and you can pay there.

http://www.flatrockranch.net/daypasses.html

Day pass is $7

EVERYONE MUST FILL OUT A WAIVER

Here is some of my usual stuff:

There are smooth parts and rocky parts and any part that makes you uncomfortable you can walk though it. Make sure you havewater (3+ liters), sun block, some food, and wear a helmet. We will be riding for about 3 hours. When we ride we will have some rest stops along the way to let everyone catch their breath. I will only be there only if there are people who RSVP "YES" by the RSVP deadline. The deadline to rsvp is the day before the meetup.

Rain cancels this event.

I will probably be wearing black shorts and a blue shirt. Look for the dark green mountain bike.

We will do the 15 mile loop first and then return to the entrance. Once you start the loop you are in it for the entire loop since there are no shortcuts or paved sidewalks to lead you back.  If we do both loops the ride adds up to about 27 miles.

Directions: Go north on I-10.  Take Exit 524 and stay on US-87BUS going into Comfort.  Turn right on FM473.  Turn left on Flat Rock Creek Road.  Continue until the road ends and you will run straight into the gate and see the ranch sign. Open the gate and get in then close the gate.

Had so much fun and the group was great! Thanks for keeping an eye on me! Woke up this morning with a stiff neck from a crash yesterday, that big rock towards the end got me! My bike and I flipped and bent the rear derailleur, right brake lever, and handlebar. I finished the rest of the ride with 3 to 4(smallest cog to middle) gears available all the way to the end. But I made it!

I saw 94 degrees on the garmin. One fall, a second flat tire, but the second group made it. Now you know what the trail is like and can try it again another day. I struggled with the trails with you. I like what Ronnie said that this is a new accomplishment. Good ride and we need to do this more often.

Really enjoyed checking out this place for the first time. Thanks Enrique for setting it up! Since it's getting hotter, perhaps in the future we can start it earlier in day.

For those of new to the trail, there is a port-a-potty a little bit behind the trailer when you get to the dirt parking area. You may want to drink a bottle of water during the drive maybe 30 minutes before getting there just to get more water in your system before the ride. Optional, of course. Depends on how you feel.

It looks to me from the map we turn right on FM473 or is it correct to turn left on FM473?

    May 31, 2014

    • Enrique

Intersection of fm473 and bus87 then go east.

      May 31, 2014

    • Enrique

The map is correct. The ranch is a little further down the road than what is shown on the map. The road will end and you will run right into the gate

Bring some lunch in an ice chest for after the ride. We can sit and eat for a while when we are done riding.

FYI-I hav a 26" so I will b off the pace since I learned riding w 29ers such as Mando and Tony it makes difference. But looking fwd to the ride and learning more about which 29er to buy. Question: when completing the loop r we near the cars to restock on fluids if we need to?

    May 28, 2014

    • Enrique

Maybe I should add that this is not a race and we will have rest stops. We will try to keep the group together. If there is interest I can start to schedule this more often so we can get used to doing the route.

Looks like I will be riding my 26 also. The 29 is going for its new tires.
