Hey everyone, looking for others into creating table top terrain with Hirst Arts molds. I have ten of the sci-fi molds and would like to host or meet up with others that want to cast, assemble and paint these terrain pieces. I would love to build some fantasy dungeons/castles if anyone has the molds for them. I have plenty of dental grade plaster to share for anyone wanting to try out casting. Here is a list of the molds I have:
270 Starship deck,271 laboratory floor, 272 service floor, 273 pipeline floor, 300 station builder, 301 starship wall, 302 cargo bay accessory, 303 med lab accessory, 320 5/8 pipe, 321 3/8 pipe.here is a link to the Hisrt Arts website: http://www.hirstarts.com/
I hope to meet up with some other casters out there, or introduce some of you to a new part of the gaming community.
The date is kind of tentative right now.

Well,Eddie, hope to see at the next one. We had a great time, and Cecil is an expert at this. I will keep casting that way at the next meetup, we can do a little casting, but also some building, and maybe some painting. Shoot me a PM with your email.

glad to hear it was a success. I wasn't able to come to this one, but looking forward next time.

Thanks for hosting the molding Dan. It's certainly more fun doing the casting with someone else. I got 16 fieldstone walls, 8 floor, and six octagonal wall molds done. I'll do some more of the fieldstone walls and maybe next time we can start putting some of these together.

Hi Dan, wx forecast is 60% rain, will this been an issue?

Hey everyone. Yes, I CAN host this event this weekend. Sorry about the confusion and the delay last time. My room is not "finished" being setup, but we will have the plenty of space to work. Please, anyone indenting to come out, send me a PM with your email, and I will send better directions and a photo of my house. Last week I hosted a game, and some people from north of me had a lot of delays driving down. One guy was on the road for +2 hrs. So everyone, please PM me, and I will respond with more info. Thanks. Dan.

Just double-checking that we are on for this coming Saturday. And is there anything besides molding stuff that you would like us to bring?

    August 20

  • David L.

Are there molds available for 6mm scale scifi, I am a fan of older games like Dirtside.

    August 9

    • Cecil S.

I am not aware of any, but if we create the original, we can certainly make our own

Hi guys! I have some bad news. My house holds just arrived from Germany, they were supposed to be here last week. My house won't be ready to have this event by this weekend. I have to move the date to two weeks further out to the 23rd. Sorry for the late notice, but hopefully a few others can make it now.

Actually works better for me--I should be able to be there for the entire time now. Hope the move isn't too hectic (been there--got those T-shirts)

Please take a look at this page if you have not casted before. Again, I am not asking people to bring plaster (die stone) to cast with, I have about 20 lbs of Excalibur. The only thing you really need to bring, other than molds, is maybe a pounding board. If someone did want to bring a bottle of Jet Dry, or an actual Surfactant, that would be great too. http://www.hirstarts.com/casting/casting.html

I checked on what I actually have. I have about 20 pounds left of both Merlin's Magic and Excalibur (I prefer Merlin's). I have about 40 molds--almost all the fieldstone molds (with several duplicates so it does not take me as long to create enough for a project). I also have the tavern molds.

Wow! So you are our resident expert then!! I have not done too much with all this yet, the main I am reaching out to others, to get a group together who can share ideas and the fun.

I am into a few miniature games that are at the 28 - 30mm scale and looking to expand my collection of terrain and willing to go into a large bag purchase of plaster.

    July 25

    • Eddie

I was referring to something like Merlin's Magic, which I hear referred to as dental stone, maybe to differentiate it from plaster of paris. I think we're on the same page in terms of avoiding the easily chip-able PoP.

    • Dan

True, what I and many others use is really Dental Stone, put most people still call it plaster. I just wanted to make sure you didn't want to cast in resin. I would love to try that out one day, but I am not ready for that yet. For those interested in prices: http://www.atlanticde...

I can't make this one, but would be very interested in future HA events. I have two cavern molds, probably picking up one or two more this year at GenCon.

    July 23

    • Cecil S.

I would love to see the results of the cavern molds. I have those on my wish list.

      July 24

    • Eddie

I'm still learning to cast, so my results aren't the best. Hopefully at the next meetup, I'll be able to bring some examples.

For anyone that has never casted before. After pouring the plaster in the molds, it takes about 30 minutes for the pieces to set all the way. After that they can be popped out. They are not dry yet, and should not be painted or glued yet. This can take another 24-48 hours before pieces are ready for gluing and painting. So on the first day, we won't be able to do anything but mass produce pieces. Just thought everyone should know, in case you were hoping for a finished product in one day.

  • David L.

Hi Dan, what is the plaster material needed? can we get some from Michaels or AC Moore?

    July 24

    • Cecil S.

I have a couple types of dental plaster--I'll bring some along. I order mine and have it delivered to the house.

      July 24

  • Dan

I'm not sure. I have not been in the US for about 7 years now. The stuff I use is a dental grade plaster called Excalibur. I did buy some plaster in Germany at the "home depot" there, and the parts would crumble in my hand. I'm not sure what they have at the craft stores here. I do have quite a bit of plaster we can use though. But people bring some, that is ok too. I don't have these yet, but I really want to get these! http://www.combatwombatminiatures.com/star_fortress.htm

Thanks for the great response everyone! Here is a link to one of sets that I built a long time ago. http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/Rtwo_Builder/library/Chem%20Plant

Please note, this date is still tentative...Our household goods still have not arrived from Germany yet! So this date may change. I will keep everyone informed. I imagine this will last until about 5 or 6ish, maybe longer, who knows, so if anyone wants to show up later on they are more than welcome too.

    July 24

  • Cecil S.

I was reminded that I have a "mandatory fun" event on that Saturday that will last until about 1:30. Can I show up at 3pm?

    July 23

  • Cecil S.

I have plenty of the stoneworks molds--will bring them along as well.

I will try to make it. I am travelling on business that week, but hopefully will be back. I have a bunch of the fantasy molds whcih I have not used in years:
    •Wizard's Tower mold #50
    •Dragon's Inn mold #51
    •Tomb mold #56
    •Turret mold #61
    •Wood Shingle Roof Mold #240
•Woodland Scenics Boulders Mold A couple of these were the prototypes from when Bruce was starting his business.

I would be interested in having a go with these and some of the sci-fi molds.
