The August NYC Brown University Meetup

It's that time again!

Yes you heard it right, we're having the first Brown University Meetup of 2011 on AUGUST 9th!

Enjoy short presentations by recent and not-so-recent Brown graduates at our casual classroom-style hour long meetup. We'll be asking for $5 at the door for food/venue expenses.

We've quite the tantalizing lineup this time around:

  • John Goodwin, CTO & Co-Founder of SnapGoods - hailed by TechCrunch as the "Zipcar of Gadgets"
  • Alison Klayman, Documentary Director and Producer of "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" - a movie about the recently released Chinese artist, raising over $50,000 on Kickstarter
  • Steve Daniels, Researcher in IBM's Social Computing Group at the Watson Research Center - working on "Watson", the killer "Jeopardy!" computer

Come to hear people speak and figure out who's who from Brown in New York.

Snacks, refreshments, and name-tags will be provided.

I am delighted to see this meetup relaunched and give the new organizers major kudos for making it happen.

I am withholding one star because I would like to see presentations with a little more focus. In my experience attending most of the meetups held so far, the format that works best is describing either a project, passion, or journey that is personal to the presenter. The organizers can contact me privately if they want more details as I do not want to embarrass the presenters, who overall did an excellent job.

I would also like to suggest that a nearby bar be pre-designated for a "happy hour" after the event, to allow the evening to continue for those who are interested. Sharing the venue of the "happy hour" before the event allows for a) a smooth transition from the presentations to the bar, without long deliberations and uncertainty during which most of the group dissipates; and b) for alumni who cannot make the formal meetup to have the opportunity to join after.

The quality of speakers was excellent. The food and the introductions of each speaker were pretty sub-par.

Fascinating presentations by really interesting, creative Brown grads + fun socializing, meeting other Brown alum from a range of classes and fields = a simple but terrific equation.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
