L'Age d'Or at The Morgan Library & Museum

Admission to the museum is free on Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Exhibition-related films are free with museum admission (so for this film, free also). Tickets are available at the Admission Desk on the day of the screening.

Directed by a master of Surrealist cinema and co-written with Salvador Dali, this avant-garde surrealist comedy is a gleeful fever dream of Freudian unease, bizarre humor, and shocking imagery. Starring Gaston Modot and Lya Lys, and the famed surrealist painter Max Ernst. This screening is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Drawing Surrealism.

This Meetup was fascinating, as much for the people who participated as for the event itself. Group organizer Karen has a particular talent for discovering events and venues that are of wide interest yet out of the mainstream. This event was especially thought-provoking, raising the question about art (Does art bypass the rational mind or engage it?). Thank you, Karen.

Hello. Is this movie in English or French? If it's in French, will it have English subtitles?

    March 15, 2013

    • Karen

Hi Cynthia: It's in French with "intertitles" (not sure how those differ from subtitles). Please note that this film was co-created by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali and "is considered one of the most notorious works of avant-garde art of the 20th Century. Riots at its premiere caused the film to be banned for decades." The surrealist style means there won't be much of a plot, and one review described it as having "subversive and profane content." It is not a film for the faint-of-heart.
