Full Moon Paddle on Old Hickory Lake (and Pre-Paddle Tapas Social)

  • Aug 10, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Tapas Social: 6pm at AJ's House
Location: Text[masked] for address

Paddle Launch Time: 8-8:30pm
Location: GPS point 451 Braid Drive Mount Juliet TN 37122 (not my home address); launch ramp and pier are at the end of Braid Drive. (http://goo.gl/maps/AvljG)

Return Time: Whenever!

Destination: We will paddle south from the launch site at a leisurely pace for about 1.5 miles to Dry Fork Branch. Barring clouds, the moon will be in full view the entire paddle.

Conditions: This part of Old Hickory Lake is off the main river path, so it's very calm. Watch the weather and dress appropriately.

Pets: You can bring your dog(s) to the Social, if they get along with other dogs and people. There is no fenced area. You can bring your dog(s) to the paddle, too.

Boats and Gear:

• IF YOU ARE COMING AND CAN BRING EXTRA BOATS AND GEAR, post a comment when you RSVP so we can work together to match your supply to need.

If you are bringing extra gear for someone to use and then decide you aren't coming, you must communicate with the person using your gear to let them know you're not coming.

• IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BOAT AND GEAR, post a comment when you RSVP so we can work together to determine needs and supply in advance.

Please communicate directly via comments with people bringing extra gear. You must see that the lender gets the boat there, and have your PFD and lights.

TAPAS SOCIAL

1. If you are coming to the Tapas Social, bring your favorite tapas (appetizer) and your favorite drink.

2. Begins at 6pm. Late arrivals welcome. No need to call, text, or email.

3. Short of getting lost, please do not contact me starting 4 hours before the event. I'll be busy preparing. Please PLAN AHEAD.

FULL MOON PADDLE

1. If you are coming to the paddle ONLY, we will begin launching at 8-8:30pm. Please be at the launch site and ready to go.

2. Bring your boat, PFD, and lights. (In-craft lights look beautiful, but remember to bring a white outer light for your craft too. It's the law.)

Don't wait until the last minute ...

Get the addresses for the social and the launch EARLY.

Get your gear figured out EARLY.

Communicate EARLY.

Thanks!

AJ, Elynor and I had a great time at the social. You and Dan were so nice to host. Enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone in the group. Not to mention a perfect night for a paddle. Could not have been better. Glad I could get Elynor to come along. Thank you!!

DITTO! :-) (I spelled Elynor's name incorrectly on pictures I posted! Mea culpa, my dear!) I'm glad she came too. It was too beautiful a night and moon to experience them without the people you love most. Hope we see you both again soon! xoxo AJ

I was checking out the timing for a low point for the moon and depending upon the tree height in the back it would be somewhere between 630 and 730

    August 9, 2014

  • Jimmy D H.

not to worry, the background of that BEAUTIFUL lake in the background would be perfect.

please read lower post first. had to break up and eliminate part of the news caption. It's well-known that the moon looks bigger when it's near the horizon than when it's high in the sky, although there's some debate about the reason for the perceptual "moon illusion." Whatever the reason, the moon looks more impressive when it's on the rise. And it also makes for a better picture when you can include something interesting in the foreground of your supermoon snapshot. Like the French Alps, for instance.

Well crap. I already let the air out of the Alps for the season. They're in the storage shed until next spring.

This Supermoon Hogs the Spotlight Sunday (Sorry, Perseid Meteors)
Purists will protest: At its closest, the full moon is about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than it is at its farthest. That difference is virtually impossible to perceive with the naked eye. It becomes noticeable only when you compare two photos of the full moon taken under the same conditions at different times of year…One strategy for supermoon-watching would be to take in the experience around midnight, when your viewing location is at its minimum distance from the moon. But to maximize the drama, stake out a spot with a clear view to the east, and watch for the moon creeping up into the sky around sunset. This online calculator from TimeandDate.com can tell you when moonrise occurs in your area, and the Clear Sky Chart shows the forecasts for sky conditions.
