Start of Spring Walk

Despite the chill in the air, song sparrows and cardinals are singing all day long now, and red-winged blackbirds are returning... Spring is coming, and we can't wait!

A nice way to kick off the season is with a 2.5-mile walk at The Nature Conservancy's Francis Carter Preserve in Charlestown. Hikers are treated to a variety of beautiful landscapes at Carter, whether exploring the rocky woods or walking across a wide open meadow. On this hike, we'll do both -- listening for early spring songbirds (Phoebes and Bluebirds), and keeping an eye out for the first butterflies. (That may be a stretch, but we'll see.)  We'll also leave time for stops at two vernal pools.  I don't think we'll find any wood frog egg masses yet, but I bet the fairy shrimp will be dancing.  It's one of my favorite Rites of Spring at the Carter Preserve!

Sturdy shoes are recommended, as the trail may be muddy in places. PLEASE NOTE:  a short portion of the walk will be off-trail.

Directions: We'll meet at the Old Mill Road parking lot. From I-95, take Exit 3A, Route 138 East. Drive 2.3 miles and bear right onto Route 112. Once on 112, continue south for 4.6 miles, passing through the village of Carolina, crossing Route 91, and passing the Charlestown Elementary School. You will see a Carter Preserve entrance on the right -- Keep Going! Drive past the preserve sign on Route 112 and take the next right onto Old Mill Road. Follow Old Mill Road for about a half-mile, and bear right into the parking area (under the power lines).

The Saturday forecast is calling for morning showers, but so far, not enough to force postponing the walk. Looking forward to it.
