Williamsburg Book Club

Dear book club members:  On Saturday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m., we'll meet to discuss "The Good Soldier", a novel by Ford Madox Ford that is considered a classic.  According to a review at Amazon.com:

"Stephen King never wrote such a horrifying novel - it's about the savagery and madness that lay behind the thin surface of ordinary, polite society. In it, Ford virtually invented the "unreliable narrator" and raised the question: how do we know what anyone tells us is true? Jim Thompson's psychotic protagonists are unimaginable without this deceptively genteel predecessor.  The Modern Library ranked The Good Soldier 30th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century."

We hope you'll be able to join us!  Until then, have a great summer!

Lisa

The discussion added to my understanding and appreciation of the book and kept me thinking about it for hours afterwards. Good food too. Thanks all!

I'm new to the area. What does JCC stand for? Do we bring pupu's or dessert? I'm going to try to attend.

Welcome to the area! "JCC" stands for the unwieldy "James City County" which, in addition to York County and Williamsburg are considered "Williamsburg". As far as what to bring - some folks don't bring anything, and that's absolutely fine; others bring snacks or desserts, or wine or beer - it's really up to you. As the hosts, we make sure there's at least some snacks, decaf coffee, and soft drinks available. Looking forward to meeting you!

Also, there is a grab bag for this book at the JCC Library. It includes 12 copies of the book.
