We will meet at Odessa, which is located beside Tomkins Square Park in the East Village on Avenue A between East 7th and St. Mark's Place. Please note that there are two sides to this place. We will be at the 117 side which is usually less crowded at this time, instead of the 119 side next door. This place has a huge menu from which you can order any type of food at any time. The place gets a “0” on the pretension meter, and you can thank that for the cheap prices. You will not see scores of people camped out with their laptops soaking up free wi-fi, sipping overpriced lattes. It’s open 24/7 and there’s a full bar in case you’re in the mood.
As this will be the first meetup of this group it will be particularly free form in structure. Introductions will be in order. People are encouraged to bring up specific aspects of gender roles that are of concern to them. The aim here is to build an initial rapport and awareness of where people are coming from. Over time, the meetups may become somewhat more structured – especially as they grow in size with repeat attendees who are already familiar with each other.
So come on out and feel free to bring up any Gender-Related issue – no matter how taboo. The emphasis here is upon adult discussion that is calm and respectful, yet also dynamic and probing. We’re not here to gloss over, sugarcoat or sweep under the rug any subjects that may arouse discomfort. Rather, let us listen to one another with openness, so that we may feel understood in proportion to the extent we have widened our perspective.
