The film, which is being released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures on June 12, reveals how the nation’s food supply is controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, and the environment. In addition to Eric Schlosser, the film features compelling interviews with Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma), Joel Salatin (Polyface Farms), and Gary Hirschberg (Stonyfield Farms).
The film challenges the viewer to think about their food, and is designed to bring about positive change through legal reform, consumer awareness, and improved shopping and eating habits. The panel discussion will explore the many issues raised by the film, looking at both the problems and the solutions.
Food, Inc. premiered at the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals. Entertainment Weekly film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote, “I am not generally in the habit of praising documentaries for being good for you, but Food, Inc. is more than a terrific movie, it’s an important movie, one that nourishes your knowledge of how the world works (or in this case, has started not to work.)”
