Another introduction to FPGA programming, please

At this meetup, we’re going to go over the basics of FPGA programming. The presentation will start with an overview of how FPGAs work, and then jump straight into Verilog. With a bit of syntax under our belt, we will then perform some modifications to an existing TTL counter design and (time pending) finish up by building bitfiles to run the timer on a real FPGA.

This will be a hands on discussion, so be sure to install the Altera design tools before you arrive: http://www.altera.com/products/software/quartus-ii/web-edition/qts-we-index.html

    thanks justin - great introduction!

does anyone have suggestions for fun beginner FPGA projects?

The slides, verilog "cheat sheet", class materials, a set of syntax highlighting macros for vim, and the solution to Exercise 2 (search for the r_cnt_dn signal to see the changes) can be found here:

...I hope everyone enjoyed the meetup. I am willing to speak again in the future (on non-financial topics) if someone is interested in a particular topic.

I have posted some instructions on setting up the Altera tools here:

    http://binaryllama.net/dropbox/fpga_meetup/

...Try to get everything setup prior to arriving at the meetup so we can focus on digging into the slides and hands-on material.

    Thanks,
    Justin

To clarify, I will be covering the exercises listed on that page as part of my talk. The only thing you need to worry about before attending the meetup is getting the Altera tools installed and (hopefully) functioning.

Quick question: is it still planned to use the BeMicro for this LAB/Class? http://www.altera.com/b/nios-bemicro-evaluation-kit.html

If you have a BeMicro board, please bring it along. The sample design we will be going over supports the board and can be loaded onto it.

Does anyone have an example FPGA running a fix parser I could have a look at? Thanks,

I implemented one as a school project. If you want then we can discuss about it. Please send me a PM.

I am terribly sorry about the delay in scheduling this; the summer simply got away from me. At any rate, I have slides for an "Intro to Verilog and FPGAs" presentation put together and will check with the event planners here at Two Sigma this week to get a date setup for the meetup. I will try to plan it for the first week of November to give everyone enough who wants to attend enough time to clear off a spot in their schedule.

I've been diving back in recently. Quartus couldn't scare me away long enough I guess. ;-)

I'd be in for some more learning focussed events as well. We could possibly sidestep the hardware for some time with Icarus Verilog.

I work at Two Sigma, I will talk with David and get the space reserved.

I could provide a location, but may not be too central - Rutgers U in New Brunswick NJ. Let me know if this would work

  • Justin T.

I am willing to put together some slides for this and give a talk if there is enough interest.

    I'll second that.
