DONE with WINTER! - FIRST MEETUP EVENT (and other info)

We have a lot in store for this season and we’d like to share a few things with everyone:

First and most important:!

Our own Meetup Co-organizer, Leslie Adatto is putting the finishing touches on her first book titled “Roof Explorer’s Guide: 101 New York City Rooftops.” (cue cheers – YEA!!)

Leslie has spent the past 2 years researching all manner of greenroofs, rooftop gardens, rooftop bars, and anything “Green” or Garden on a rooftop in NYC. She has traveled all of the boroughs in search of Rooftop green spaces. The book will be out sometime in the next few months and we will advise everyone of its publication. Its chock-full of information on great rooftop public spaces, secret gardens, watering holes and has beautiful color photographs of most sites. It can be used as a checklist of places to visit and also for out of town guests.

Second and almost as monumental:

Please join us for the FIRST official 2014 Garden meetup event.

Finally – we can get back to being outside!!

Newest member Susan L has volunteered to host on her 650+ square foot terrace. She has views of the North, South and East and you can even see Yankee Stadium.

The Terrace is planted with nine planters containing a Japanese maple, a butterfly bush, a holly bush, skimmia, hydrangea, hostas, spirea, honeysuckle, wisteria, sedum, climbing roses.

As this is early in the season, we don’t know how much will be in bloom, BUT, what a better way to spend time with your fellow garden enthusiasts and put a cold winter behind us.

Come on up to Susan’s and meet some of your fellow enthusiasts (you meet the nicest people in a garden meetup group!)

We can also use this kickoff event to have a seedling exchange (a lot of my stuff did not come back.. – how’d everyone else do?)

Some info: For new members, we charge a small fee so that people will commit to the event (I’m happy to explain more fully if anyone is interested).

Snacks and drinks are welcome and Susan offered to host for most of the day.

See you then!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow. An important transportation tip! If you take the A, B, D, or C trains, exit the 145th St. station at the NE 145th exit. Don't be tempted to use the 148th St. exit. 148th from St. Nicholas does not go through to Bradhurst. There is a park in the way. If you take the #3 train, go to the end of the line at Lennox Terminal. Walk 2 blocks east to Bradhurst. The address is 130 Bradhurst.

I am very excited to attend my first event! I love gardening and farming!!

I am an engineer who just moved here a month ago. I worked on an organic volunteer farm for several years, and have always been passionate about gardening.

Looking forward to meeting you all and absorbing some wisdom!

I just now realized that May 3 is Kentucky Derby day. Ladies are welcome to wear their Derby hats! I've never made or drank a mint julep in my life, but I willing to try.

There are no stairs. Just a door from inside leading out to the terrace. Since this is pretty much an open house format, guests can come and go as they please, so I don't think a cap on the number of people is necessary.

Please come and spend the afternoon at my little urban oasis! There will be libations and snacks. I'll fire up the Weber grill for brats, dogs, burgers, or whatever. The plants were installed just last year and I was worried that some of them didn't survive the winter, but they are coming back nicely. I welcome any suggestions on additions/improvements. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we can still gather indoors.

hi susan, a member asked about stairs - do we climb stairs to get to your terrace?

      April 22, 2014

  • Rhea A.

    I have a conference...indoors!
    Enjoy for me.

    YAY spring :)
can you please advise about accessing the space ? i'm assuming since it's a terrace there are no stairs ? also, if this is lasting for a few hours, do you plan to cap the event with a certain # of RSVP's ?

and congrats leslie - i'd like to buy a signed copy when available

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
