More than 1300 developers in 80 cities worldwide will explore the potential of webOS (the revolutionary mobile operating system that powers the Palm Pre mobile phone) at PreDevCamp; this grassroots software-development gathering will feature presentations, refreshments and hackathons where webOS developers can pool their creativity and experience to create new apps for the Palm Pre with both the free Mojo Software Development Kit and traditional web technologies.

BlueSwitch, PreCentral, O'Reilly, Zanox, and Adobe are premier sponsors for the event; additional support was supplied by LittleSprings Design, Pivotal Labs and UE Architects.

Widely praised as the iPhone's first real competition, Palm Pre is the latest hot mobile phone. It features a touch screen and a centralized application marketplace -- the App Catalog -- but unlike the iPhone, it also offers a hardware keyboard and powerful multi-tasking features.

Palm's major investors include Elevation Partners one of whose partners and co-founders is Managing Director Bono, the band U2's lead singer. Managing Director and Co-Founder Roger McNamee declared that Palm Pre is the reason Elevation elected to invest more than $400 million into Palm.

The not-for-profit PreDevCamp.org, led by Dan Rumney, Lisa Brewster and Greg Stevenson, is a volunteer-organized gathering similar to the iPhoneDevCamp; its mission is to facilitate the development of applications for the Palm Pre by empowering mobile- and web developers, UI designers and testers, who come to work and learn together over the course of a highly focused yet convivial weekend.

Palm and O'Reilly Media are providing PreDevCamp with over 500 copies of the Palm webOS book published by O'Reilly, a development guide written by Palm software's chief technology officer Mitch Allen. The forward for Palm webOS was written by PreDevCamp organizer Greg Stevenson.

Major events in San Francisco (at Palm headquarters), New York (at BlueSwitch), Kansas City (at Sprint headquarters), San Diego, and Dallas will feature live streaming presentations by A-list webOS developers and Palm engineers. Michael Prenez-Isbell, Mobile Director for BlueSwitch, will head up the New York City event.

The designers of the best apps submitted in five key categories will win a new Palm Pre mobile phone, donated by PreCentral, home of the most active Palm Pre community on the web.

The categories are:

Media (creating/managing music, photos and video)
Communication (improved message transmission)
Games (tapping, wiping, shaking and more)
Productivity and Reference (improved day-to-day tools)
System utilities (making Pre work for users)
