Liverpool Boardgamers

We are a group of modern board gamers who meet every Monday night at The Ship and Mitre pub in Liverpool town centre. We play games like Puerto Rico, Battlestar Galactica, Small Worlds, Kingdom Builder, Twilight Struggle, Agricola, Dominion and many of the high-rated Boardgamegeek games, with a tendency to the medium to heavy games. There will be information on recently played games throughout this thread, and also in this list

We started meeting in 2006 and have grown in numbers every year since to our current size of playing 3 or 4 games at a time, which has led to us recently moving from The Lion Tavern when our typical turnout became consistently too big to fit into the pub.

Meetings are completely informal without any fees beyond a requirement of spending something in the pub (there's a big selection of sweets in jars for the drivers and non-drinkers), they run from 6.00 until closing time, with short games until 7.00 to allow everyone time to get there, then we play our main games for the night. Turn up occasionally if that suits you, there's no need to arrange anything but if you intend to arrive soon after 7.00 please let us know you're coming and we'll wait for you so you don't spend 2 hours waiting for a game to finish.

The games are decided on the night depending on how many of us there are, what we have, who fancies playing what etc. We bring a selection each week but feel free to bring your own games. If you haven't played these games before we're happy to teach you the rules, and often play new stuff just released so we will all need to learn it. We're welcoming new members all the time so it's not one of those groups restricted to a bunch of old friends, just as long as you're at least 18 (pub restriction).

The Ship and Mitre is at the top of Dale Street, opposite the flyover. It is a 5 minutes walk to Lime Street or Moorfields train stations and a couple of minutes walk from the bus gyratory. It has been the Liverpool pub of the year many times, serves hot food until 9PM, and has15 handpumps and fridges full of European and Yankee beers and Ciders that in no way influenced our decision to move here. The private room we play in is quite lovely, with lots of space, sofas and plenty of tables we can arrange to suit our games. The postcode is L3 2JH. It's best to ask for directions to upstairs at the bar on your first visit. On street parking is free from 6PM (7.30 in the car park opposite the pub), and there are plenty of slots in Hatton Gardens, Forsyth Street and Old Haymarket for those who can negotiate one-way systems, and also in the deserted side roads by the pub.

Their website has more information and photos of our room (not the garish red it seems and no pool table now).

A lot drive here, so lifts home are possible if needed. Our usual attendance is between 15 and 22 players (we have lots of irregulars).

If you need more information post a message here and someone will answer your questions.

We also have a very active yahoo groups site which we use to communicate with each other and arrange one-off sessions, big games, trips to conventions and all-day events, arrival times on Mondays, social events and to exchange pleasantries, but to post there you need to register first with yahoo and then our group.

There's no charge or drawbacks to this, you can leave anytime and it doesn't generate tons of marketing emails. If you expect to be coming along it's a better communication site as messages posted there are sent out as emails to the other members who take that option, easier than having to check this forum for updates.
