Annual Holiday New York City Hike!

Join us for our annual Holiday NY City Hike! This year's route will be different than previous years!

We will be meeting at 9:45 at the Christmas Tree in NY Penn Station. I will be taking the 8:42 am train from Summit NJ to arrive at 9:42 in Penn Station if anyone wants to join me. The route this year will pass by some places we've hit in the past, but also many new ones.
We'll start by heading west out of Penn Station and getting on The High Line which has been extended since we last walked it!

We will get off of the High Line and continue along Riverside Park and the west side greenway. We'll continue to Tribeca where we'll cut across, then take the amazing hike across the Brooklyn Bridge, always a good time.

Once we get to the other side, we'll get on the waterfront in Brooklyn as closely as we can, and follow it south. We'll also likely cut into one of the cemeteries and pocket parks. Near the end of the hike, we'll walk the greenway beneath the Verrazanno Narrows Bridge, and experience the amazing Christmas lights at Dyker Heights, regarded I am told as some of the best in the country. From there we can take a Subway back to Penn Station.

We will be hiking at least fifteen miles, but for this hike, with public transportation all around and more convenient than just about anywhere, anyone can come and do whatever amount of the hike they'd like.

This annual event is a very difficult one for me to keep track of everyone. I urge everyone to keep an eye on me and watch for the group. Too often we've had someone stop to take a picture or use a restroom without letting me know and we move on without them. We always have well over twenty participants, and so keeping together is a different than on non urban hikes. Everyone must be responsible for themselves and keep with the group. We will be stopping and going a lot, and there is no room for anyone to be unconscious of their surroundings.

Please make time to use restrooms BEFORE meeting at the xmas tree. We will be moving along shortly after arrival at the tree. With large groups, restroom stops tend to take over a half hour and slow progress substantially. Let's do our best to move along as a group.

I was taking some pictures and I lost the group when the high line ended.

Did you find us again? With a total of 75 participants it was tough to keep track as anticipated, but overall it seemed to work out!

Hey Mike, I think I'll be on your train, probably hopping on in South Orange. Where in Penn Station is the tree? We get in at 9:42 and I don't want to risk wandering around and missing the group.

Everyone, this is one of the heaviest attended hikes I run.
In NYC, there is public transportation everywhere so anyone can cut out at any time. I just want to make clear that I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP TRACK OF EVERYONE! There will likely be 150 participants in this trip, and I organize only the route. People tend to make wrong turns and such, and managing a group in this city and with this number is impossible to do like I would any other hike. I have prepared a basic route everyone should know.
Penn Station, along with Madison Square Garden is on 33rd Street. We will head two blocks south to 30th and head west. The High Line is accessed there. We will follow the High Line south to the end, and come down the steps. We then head a couple blocks west and follow Riverside Park south to Tribeca. Here, we turn east on Chambers Street toward Brooklyn Bridge, which we cross.
After this, we simply follow Brooklyn Waterfront as closely as possible.

Gus: From the write up of the hike: "Once we get to the other side, we'll get on the waterfront in Brooklyn as closely as we can, and follow it south. We'll also likely cut into one of the cemeteries and pocket parks. Near the end of the hike, we'll walk the greenway beneath the Verrazanno Narrows Bridge, and experience the amazing Christmas lights at Dyker Heights, regarded I am told as some of the best in the country. From there we can take a Subway back to Penn Station." Assuming the hike sticks to that plan.....and the weather presumably doesn't impact things.

It looks like there is the possibility of rain this Sunday. Will the trip be cancelled if this is this case? If so, when will we know?

Sorry Mike. Have to back out. This sounds like the closest a hike can be to a party. Hope you'll all have fun.
