16 Mile High Falls and Kingston Area Rail Trails and More Hike

Join us for an outstanding point to point hike between High Falls and Kingston, mostly using old railroad rights of way.
Sixteen miles, mostly flat but long distance. All participants should be comfortable with high mileage.

High Falls

Meeting point will be at the High Falls parking lot in High Falls NY, which is just east of the bridge over the Rondout Creek, at following coordinates:

Lattitude: 41°49'43.66"N

Longitude: 74° 7'56.83"W

The hike will take us mostly along scenic rail trails, a lot of which is the Hurley Rail Trail.  There will also be a little bit of road walking along mostly pleasant back roads, but a little along the Kingston waterfront.

End of the Line

This promises to be an outstanding route with constantly changing scenery. We will be along the Hudson, the Rondout Creek, along abandoned track still in place as trail, a bit of the streets of Kingston, then along rail trail in town and then through pastoral settings and mixed hardwood forests on the way to High Falls, which is a lovely site on the creek at our end point.

I had a great time! I think it went very well despite icy conditions. Really amazing abandoned rail lines, can't wait to do the next trip up there!

Note everyone, that there are actually 22 more people signed up for this hike than who are in this group, there will be plenty of company!

We will not be joining in this hike since it will be cold on Sunday. I am looking forward to this hike when it is a bit warmer.

I almost never do the same hike twice, but I have plenty more great ones coming up every Sunday!

Thanks! Yah, I spoke to a couple of people and the majority of them want me to meet in NJ and it's just not visible getting up at 3am!

I will join one of your hike as it gets warmer.. Still concerned about the bathroom situation. I'm fit to do 15 miles but do I want to without a bathroom.

I know they don't... That's why I haven't signed up for a 15 mile hike yet.. I could handle 5-7 miles without but I'm not sure about 15 miles.

I can understand it takes a while to get used to, but it's extremely rewarding, and if you bring yourself to use nature's "facilities", you open up worlds of amazing views that make it all worth it. Even in NJ, we've found chains of unnamed waterfalls, but to pass through was simply not possible in a hike of less than 7 miles.

I have some great news to add for this posting: The mile road walk section at the end HAS BEEN ELIMINATED, as the rail trail now extends all the way to High Falls! We will experience the waterfront and the road section at the beginning, tracing as closely as possible the historic rail route, then get on the rail trail system that will take us directly to the end! I'm very happy for this!
