A Walk Around Early Chicago with E. O. Gale

Please join our friends, the Friends of the Chicago Portage, as they present of free historical presentation, A Walk Around Early Chicago with E. O. Gale. Master Guide and historian Gary Mechanic who will present a chronological review of Edwin Gale’s life.

The Gale family arrived in Chicago on the schooner Illinois on May 25, 1835. The next day young Edwin Gale took a walk around the town:

"What strikes us especially on going out is the entire absence of streets, of which, properly so called, there is not one, no, not even a ditch to mark the roads. Moreover, there is nothing to indicate where they ultimately will be, save the surveyor's stakes. And, as there are no streets, so there are no sidewalks."

Gale was born in 1832 and lived in Chicago and Oak Park until his death in 1913! Gary Mechanic presents stories from E. O. Gale's long life as one of Chicago's earliest residents and businessmen.  Edwin was the son of Abram Gale who the neighborhood of Galewood and the street Gale street is named after.

The presentation will begin at 1:00 P.M and will conclude before 3:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served and free parking will be available in the north lot.

This is a must see event for history lovers, educators, tour guides, and anyone else who communicates the stories of Chicago to others.

I'm sort of an Oak Park historian and the Gales were very prominent in Oak Park, so this should be very interesting.

This walk will be done sitting down. Gary Mechanic will “walk” you though Old Chicago though the eyes of E. O. Gale.

This will be interesting and fun. I lived in the Chicago neighborhood of Galewood for 13 years. 1983-1996. That is near the intersection of North and Harlem Avenues, nowhere near Gale Street.
