MUA Portfolios

The purpose of this shoot is for anyone interested in doing makeup, whether professionally or just because you like to play. Models will rotate through the makeup artists, getting basic headshots after each artist has done his/her work, then washing their face and proceeding to the next MUA in a circuit fashion. Everyone should plan to stay until at least 8 PM, and those that desire can stay later to complete the work.

We will first meet in the main parking lot by the entrance to the park and then walk to the tables by the water.  There's a sign at the entrance that looks like this:  http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kakaako-waterfront-park-honolulu?select=6_TQpopkMYJPq2JiL5AlYg&start=100

MUAs

The goal is for each MUA to have the opportunity to do at least 4 different faces for this event. I suggest selecting a single theme and building off it for continuity, for example: "wedding makeup" or "dragons" or "zombies" or "fantasy fairies"...you get the idea. You should aim for approximately 20 minutes to complete each look (if you work more quickly, you will be able to do more faces...slower work may prevent you from completing all 4 faces).

Models

For this event, please wear a plain white or black tank top. The photos will only be headshots, so there is no wardrobe coordination. Hair should be pulled back into a neat pony tail. You will need to bring your own wipes to remove makeup between MUAs as well as your own foundation (preferably both liquid and powder). The MUA will apply the foundation, but you will need to have it with you.

Photographers

You will be taking headshots for this event, so prepare accordingly with lights/lenses. You will shoot each look that comes from each MUA, so you will (hopefully) wind up with a large number of photos. You will need to work quickly, as the models will need to make the circuit through all photographers in approximately 10 minutes, so limit yourself to about 5-10 quick shots per look.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know!

What's the full name of the makeup artist that came?

This turned into zombie shoot...not quite what I was expecting, but Trevor was as nice as could be and did a nice job as our lone makeup artist. I can't say I have ever shot zombies before, but Debra and I went for it. I didn't get my flash unit to quite work so I ended up using my on board and couldn't get headshots or the effect I wanted, but still I was able to make my 1950's "movie poster". I am sure Madmarv and the others got far better headshots than I would have gotten anyway so it all worked out.

Hi fellow photogs, could I get the pocketwizard channel you plan to use so I can finalize mine and I don't unintentionally trigger your strobes. Unfortunately, this is something that cannot readily be changed in the field so have to do the prep beforehand.

I'm looking to use channel 20. Any one using that right now? Sooo looking forward for this meetup! See you soon! Thanks! -Jeff

Star, I noticed your RSVP has you as a "plus two." Do you mind letting me know what the third individual will be doing so I can make sure everything runs smoothly?

Just to make things clear, we will meet at the entrance to the park from the main parking lot. There's a big sign at the entrance that looks like this: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kakaako-waterfront-park-honolulu?select=6_TQpopkMYJPq2JiL5AlYg&start=100

We will ultimately end up at some tables by the water, but let's meet at the park entrance. I'm updating the meetup description and map pin.

Just to clarify, there will not be 4 models per MUA, the models will EACH have their faces done by EACH MUA...they will be washing off the makeup and rotating through to the next MUA. If we have more than 4 models, some may only get to visit one or two MUAs.

There seem to be a few concerns about this event & I'd like to address them...(because of the limit of characters allowed in a comment, I'm going to break this up...)

    1) All of our events are great ways to network. It's a chance to meet others, exchange ideas & see how different people work. However, the primary goal of this group is to learn; photographers to hone their craft, models to learn to work with other models & photographers, & MUA's/stylists/hair stylists/etc to practice & be able to explore different techniques/ideas. Everyone is welcome to ask others to participate in personal projects! It's something that can always be discussed @ events (so it's in person), or through sending a personal message to someone (but please respect a "no.")

    1 · July 9, 2013

  • debra

    2) The goal of this event is to have each MUA work on each model. With 4 models, each MUA will be doing a total of 4 "looks." While there are only 3 models who are signed up & quite a few photographers usually about 30% are no-shows. It's not to say people are unreliable, but things happen. It's not a big deal! Personally, I know Allison, Rachel & I are reliable. With 2 MUA's & 3 models, I think we're in pretty good shape.

    July 9, 2013

  • debra

    3) Because everyone is allowed to post events we need to respect the vision someone has for their event. We are all allowed to post comments about the event, but ultimately, whoever posted the event needs to have their wishes respected. If you don't agree with it, it's not required for you to attend every event. Having lots of people involved always makes events more fun--and we always seem to make things work--even if we have to adjust on the fly!

As always, if you have any questions, please post them here. If you have anything you'd like to address to me personally, you're always welcome to email me at [masked].

Looking forward to a great shoot!

One of the minor issues this location will have is that as the sun sets, we will need a few lights for the MUAs to do their thing. Please respond to this if you are able to bring some lights to help with this event (I will donate batteries, just let me know what type you need).

I'm looking forward to attending this event! Does anyone have outdoor halogen lights on tripod? Maybe that can help? If the models come with their foundation/concealer on everything else should be a breeze! Can't wait to meet everyone!
