Blowhole/Halona/Cockaroaches

**UPDATE**

The date has been set to the 20th.  We will meet on the side of the parking lot by the trail down to the beach.

Sunrise is early!!!! It started getting light about 5:30, and the sun was at the horizon a little after 6 and completely up by about 6:15am. And it's only getting earlier. This seems to lend itself to some beautiful silhouettes, black and whites, and then once the sun comes up all kinds of colors.

If you participate in this BRING A FLASHLIGHT! It's not a hard walk down, but it's loose rocks and very hard to see. As always, you'll need to be able to carry your things down and back up. Please don't leave anything behind!

MODELS: It's highly recommended you DON'T wear your outfit down. It'd suck to rip, tear, or ruin something getting down. This will be a 1, maybe 2, outfit shoot, so you shouldn't have a lot to carry.

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Please make sure whatever you bring is packed well, or you have a tight grip on it going down. Would hate for anyone's equipment to get damaged!

ALL: It's suggested you wear tennis shoes, hiking shoes, or something completely covering your foot. Again, it's not a hard hike down, it's short. But's all loose, dry, dusty gravel and rocks.

As always, neither organizers, individuals, or anyone related to Meetup or otherwise is responsible for you, your safety, or your personal property. We're adults!

=======================================

This is the "From Here to Eternity" beach, out past Hawaii Kai. There's a few drawbacks, and if you could offer up your opinion, please don't hesitate to post it here!

It's a little bit of a hike down to the beach. And while it's a short hike, it's steep & rocky.

It's frequently crowded...but usually just in the parking area. There are not a lot of people who make it down to the beach.

The beach itself is nice, and there are beautiful rocks/lava around it. But there are rocks and lava around it. Little dangerous/potentially uncomfortable.

However, all that being said, it's a beautiful beach, with some great potential. This would be more of a whimsical, beachy shoot, and NOT a sexy, bikini type shoot. Think more along the lines of selling an airy, light coverup and not a Victoria's Secret Brazilian cut bikini.

Please post your thoughts on this!

Ron, Barbie, and anyone else who's coming late. We'll head down a little after 5:30 but join us at the beach as soon as you can.

I would be up for this if you guys are doing it after April 10th. I won't be on island till then. I am up for the challenge of the hike!

Hello everyone, I've been busy the last few weeks and haven't been keeping in touch with this board very much, but my taxes are done and other obligations are settled for now. So this weekend's photo shoot is on my front burner again. I'd appreciate a headcount to know how many people we should wait for at the site. Please reply to this message if you are still in.

Aloha all!!! I know we have a few photographer/models, and since Allison is the only "model" listed, would those of you who are both be willing to be in front of the camera this time? There are some great places here, and with more than one model it would make sure all the photographers get a chance to work in different places and aren't crowding each other! Thank you so much, and I can't wait to see the pictures!

As cheesy as it sounds, I would love to recreate some of the scenes from the movie from Here to Eternity, including the famous kiss between Burt Lancaster and Debra Kerr.

Find a guy, and I'm down for it...Maybe Allison's boyfriend'll volunteer with her?

Anthony, my boyfriend definitely isn't into being photographed, but let me see if I can find someone. I could definitely use some partner practice!

If the weather forecast on Friday the 19th is really bad for the east side of the island, say a flood warning or hurricane approaching, we'll cancel. Otherwise we're on. A 5:30 a.m. call time can't really work on a wait-and-see basis.

It's not really a hike, just climbing down about 20 meters of rocks (I carried 30 lbs. of camera gear down there with no issues).

Let me know a date as I have shot around that area before...

Keeping the ball rolling on this photo shoot too. I figure we are going to do a sunrise-ish shoot and the sun is rising earlier and earlier nowadays so we better get moving. I'd like to lock in a date by the end of this week so please mark your availability on the poll below. http://doodle.com/iv55czbrgrsm62k3

Allison-The nickname comes from all the cockaroaches in the rocks...

Barb-I have to agree about not doing the candles. I also would prefer not to leave anything that's not natural. (It's the wannabe tree-hugger in me.)

MM-LOVE the dallas pics, yes...exactly what I was thinking. Maybe a little less stylized, little more casual. But the light, airy dresses, and the flowy-ness (*laugh*, yeah, I made that up) of it is perfect.

I'm all for doing this early, and yes, if it means getting there and setting up early, so be it!

My schedule is in flux right now (I'm in the process of changing positions as work). I hope to know where things stand in about a week or two, and hopefully we can get a time/date nailed down for this!

    January 14, 2013

    • Barbie E.

Of course. I was just shooting out ideas. I do like DALLAS photos.

I would love to be in some shoots for this as well as be behind the lens. I have an idea about lighting tea light candles in the cave. What do you guys think?

Not sure what your take on airy is but I'm in if the dates are good.

    January 13, 2013

    • madmarv

The cave will probably work, but it is fairly narrow and the ground curves up the wall. You may not be able to lay out a full spread of candles.

      Gotcha...

The rocks and hike are not really a concern for me, they are pretty tame. My only concern is the time. This is a sunrise location, and my last shoot here was too late in the day for what I would have liked. I think there is potential for some good photos around 7 a.m., but that would mean meeting and setting up at 6:30 at the latest.

Allison, here's a photo of the beach from the highway (it's not my photo BTW): http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XY5UN7qyL0u6vU69fB7Ljw Debra, I'm envisioning something like what Dallas does with her fashion shoots (http://dallasnagatawhite.com/2012/10/fashion-friday-sea/). Is this sort of along the lines you're thinking? In terms of environment and setting anyway.

Oh that blowhole...that's where I chickened out of a dive! If we do this on a Friday or Saturday morning, that would allow my boyfriend to dive while we shoot.

Ricky held a Neverland-themed photoshoot here last year. That old cover photo of this group was shot there. I really liked that cave where I shot this (http://www.meetup.com/The-Oahu-photographers-and-models-meetup-group/photos/8747832/#[masked]). It has potential for a cool backdrop if we light up the walls and ceiling. Allison, the nickname of the beach is Halona Cockroach beach.

From your description, I'm picturing big beach hats, balls, umbrellas, blankets, maybe even the beginnings of a sand castle. Is that what you had in mind? Also, what do cockroaches have to do with this?
