Desoto Mine Trip

Rating: 3.5, leaning to 4 on a couple spots, depending on weather. Return to civilization late afternoon.

We are starting the actual trail from the Cleator end. The Charles Wells guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel Trails describes the trail as starting from the Senator Road to Cleator. Click here for a copy of the trip information from the book. Pre-run volunteers would be great.  Erick-thanks for volunteering to lead a second group-it looks like with this many attendees it will be needed! Mike-with this many vehicles we will not be going to the mine itself, that's almost a trip in itself, as Erick stated. Brian-we will be leaving from the Maverik Gas Station at Prescott Country Club. Pavement from there to Mayer, then at end of trip, from Mayer back to wherever you came from-minimal pavement.

Its a fun ride, I will be doing it again sooner or latter for you Daniel ;-) Adam let me know when you get some Rocker panels and I will take you through Smasher Canyon. I'm thinking of taking a small group from another 4 wheel club through that one maybe next month. I will check with my Boss (Mark) ;-) and see what he thinks.

If you are not living on the edge then you are taking up too much room.

Malls are more dangerous than the trails.

Going to quickly post this before I go to work. Still dont know if i have can make this trip. Some of you have seen that my KJ is capable. Is this trail any harder than redrock - outlaw - powerline trail that has the same rating? If it is harder, I don't know if i can make it. That was close to the limit of the KJ Keep in mind this KJ is spring lifted with Als upper control arms, upgraded tire size, a type of LSD front and rear and my driving is good.

As I stated after my pre-run-this is a trail that requires well equipped vehicles and EXPERIENCED drivers.I hadn't done this trail in a couple years, and quite frankly scared me a bit.I have been 'wheelin for 40+ years with a lot of different people in all kinds of rigs.I feel I am pretty experienced at sizing up vehicles and their drivers, and I won't be afraid to suggest not going when we meet up before the run...I hope everyone takes these comments to heart, and makes a safe choice. We don't need anyone to get hurt or destroy their vehicle.I also noticed that the group has dwindled to 17-hopefully all experienced drivers in the properly equipped vehicles...

  • Jim P.

We preran this trip on Sat 4/5-still tough. Not short-wheelbase friendly(like my CJ-5)Lockers both ends preferable,33"tires minimum. Not for novice drivers,or vehicles not in good mechanical shape.Potentially dangerous and a bit scary even for experienced drivers. No go arounds or bail outs .We're at 21 vehicles in 2 groups, and I'm gonna freeze it at that.We still have 2 groups;one at 7 am,one at 9am.Jim-the 7am;Erick the 9am.Channel 15.See you there. April 8, 2014

We did it in a built TJ that the lockers were not working and it was rough climbing in some spots but we made it. A stock new JKU without lockers made it but did sustain some body damage.

    1 · April 8, 2014

  • Daniel

You think 35" air down, no lockers be ok in this trail? Fsj

    April 8, 2014

  • Dave P.

    Hey all

I have made this run in both a jeep and on a RZR. I would say that pick up trucks ARE NOT an acceptable vehicle for the run. Not being too hard nosed but you really need to wait for something a little more within the limits of your vehicle. There is one really washed out off camber switchback that several experienced JKU owners don't feel comfortable attacking. There are also some very eroded vertical climbs that a long wheelbase will have a problem. Its not just about tires, lockers and lifts but GRAVITY has some say in it. It is always up to the organizer whether your vehicle is acceptable or not.

As always if you elect to participate on a run then any damage, injury, cost, or loss of vehicle or equipment is solely your responsibility. In case you don't think things go bad an example is last year a local SAR group lost a Jeep that went down a 300 foot drop. These were EXPERIENCED folks.

You also inconvenience everyone else if you get in way over your head.

Mike The waiver was implemented for everyone a while ago so I apologize if you thought we did it just for you. A email; went asking everyone to sign it and most folks did. Please feel free to go on the run but I had to voice my thoughts as one of the organizers and having done this trail on several types of vehicles. Another idea is to get a few folks here that want to do some more challenging runs and pre run them then either do it on your own or announce it here. My concern is that 20 or so vehicles provide certain challenges even as to getting them all parked in safe locations. We want this to be a fun club for different levels of drivers and equipment.

      April 8, 2014

    • Mike H.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't get the email and interpreted what you said as you implemented because i joined. sorry for the misunderstanding. I was feeling a little discriminated against when you stated this trail is not for pick ups. Especially when all I have been watching are videos of pickups doing this trail just fine where the only one flipping over was a jeep. I am not looking to do anything insane. my trucks a great wheeler but its certainly no competition to the best equipped jeeps in the club. I do enjoy the challenge if its safe. I just want to know if my burban can physically get down the trail and is it safe if im careful. I wouldn't want to loose my truck for a trail. I do tend to be more stable than a jeep in some cases. Each vehicle has its own pros and cons. Some may benefit more on certain trails than others. I need to know about my likelihood of getting through this trail. Btw, if it was over my head, I'd turn around before I got stupid.
