LINK BUILDING BASICS
*******************

This section will be especially helpful for beginners.

If you aren't sure why you need links or which links are best, a basic PowerPoint explanation will be provided by Corey Creed.

He will very briefly handle these topics....
* Why links?
* Are some links bad?
* What is Google PageRank?
* How PageRank works
* What is anchor text?
* 10 Ways to get more links
* and more...

This will serve as the starting point for the good stuff...

*************************
LINKING Q&A AND DISCUSSION
*************************

We'll then open it up to the audience and the other search marketers in the room. We'll take some Q&A. But more importantly, we'll open up the discussion so that anyone can offer tips, tricks, clarifications, or other ideas on how all in attendance can be better equipped to get the links they desire to rank better on search engines.

These open discussions have been a big favorite the last couple meetings. This one should be no exception. Several local Charlotte SEO "experts" will be ready to share their insights (and maybe even disagree with each other).

LINK SWAP MEET
**************

This is the first time we've tried something like this.

With so many website owners and Internet marketers in the room, there must be opportunities for you to build links with the other attendees. So please bring business cards. Think about which of your sites you would like to get links to. Think also about how you could link to others in a natural way.

At this point, we'll have a structured way for attendees to meet other attendees. More details will be available at the meetup (and the cameras will be off). Corey posted some ideas on his blog here. (I'd appreciate your input.)

*********************************

The organizers of the Charlotte SEO Meetup sincerely hope that you'll take advantage of this opportunity to not only learn about link building, but to actually meet other website owners that you could naturally get links from.

Our paid meetings have lately had over 50 attend. We expect a much larger turnout for this meeting.

Please feel free to bring a friend, mention it on Twitter, or otherwise encourage others to be a part of it.

Talk about this Meetup

    This is my first SEO Meetup. Internet Education 101 is what I needed and received. The speakers were engaging and easy to tallk to, especially Roy. I do intend to contact the people whose business cards I exchanged.

    Good meetup. My first time with this group. Constructive discussion and Q/A. I would like to see less time spent with noob website owners or break them off in to a sub- group, even sign them up for a collective intro course with Corey or Keith or one of the others. Like "Learning the basics of SEO"..etc. I am interested in more discussions on trend like the twitter, plurk, blogs, and creative tricks.

Who attended?

  • 45 attendees
    •  Another great meetup because the whole group was engaged and contributing.
    •  Loved the panel and Q&A session! I learned a ton. Wish we had a cash drinks bar though ;-)
    •  I think it was a wise decision to curtail the panel at 8. It was a great panel and difficult to stp, but I think that networking was a key component to the success of the event last night and last month too for that matter. People need time to digest the panel conversation and talk it over with others while getting to know them for these events to really be useful and sink in for people. I'd suggest that we need an 1 hour minimum post networking opportunity every night. The half hour before or so is usually not as productive, people are still switching gears, or getting set up for the event etc. :)
    •  One of my all time favorites!
    •  http://centuryhou... was one of the links offered!
    •  Very, very informational and a great networking opportunity! In fact, it was far and away the BEST networking event I've ever attended. The people were very interested in SEO, and so much great info was shared, I can't wait till the next meetup.
    •  Very good Meetup. Note how Robert even leveraged his comment rating this event for link building (via inputting URLs like http://www.ephric... - That's priceless :) I actually thought Corey's 10-15 minute overview was fantastic. Spot-on. He hit all the key concepts and didn't miss much of anything that I noticed, while at the same time being brief and wasting no time there. If I were to cover the same points it would have taken me 3 times as long at least. Very skillfully done. Q&A was pretty good but its hard to have 40-50 people really discuss anything. I think it was just long enough and also ended at the right time too. I too feel as though the post-structure networking time is where I get the most value. I would love to see the formal / structured part of these events be 60-90 minutes tops, and then the rest be open for networking. Had lots of great conversations. Got lots of great ideas. Made great contacts.
    •  So much to learn! Such good teachers!
    •  Another great meeting.
    •  I think this meeting had a little something for everyone. I think there is definitely multiple stages of industry knowledge at these events which has its pros and cons. Breaking up at the end was key to the success of this Meetup. It enabled industry leaders to brainstorm theoretical application, beginners to keep focus on strategic implementation and small business owners/entrepreneurs to network properly. It must be hard to come up with focus topics with so much diversity. For that reason I feel that the first hour between the presentation and Q&A set a good theme for rest of the evening. It allows the group to see who has experience in the subject matter and enables them to field their questions or network properly in the second half of the meeting. I had some detailed conversations with a few higher level search marketing professionals which definitely changed my perception on what this group has to offer. I am looking forward to participating in future events.
    •  I thought the presentation was great and very informative. The knowledge in the room was vast, and the panel was upbeat. This was my first ever attending of a meetup group, and the people were very nice and easy to talk to. Thanks
    •  If this rating petains to July 9 at the Ivey I will say that it was very informative. Mostly everyone there is more internet experienced than me; yet time was taken out to go over the basics of "link building" amongst other items.
