Welcome to the Ottawa-Gatineau Running and Outdoor Fitness Meet-Up group!
Ottawa Gatineau area is a wonderful place to live for those who love the great outdoors. Vast green spaces and extensive trail networks make the capital city a particularly favourable spot to outdoor enthusiasts. But for those new to the area or new to outdoor fitness, attempting to find one’s place within a seemingly endless array of opportunity can prove a daunting undertaking. At the same time, those familiar and comfortable with outdoor activities might find it difficult to find new companions and friends with which to explore and experience the outdoors. Hence, the objective of this group is to facilitate networking and friendship among runners and outdoor enthusiasts by organizing frequent and interesting events that are both physically challenging and socially stimulating.
Who is this group for?
Broadly speaking, this group is intended for anyone who wishes to engage in outdoor fitness pursuits; including (but not limited to) running, hiking, swimming and cycling. Membership is exclusively directed toward neither the novice nor the expert; rather participation is encouraged among those from all levels of experience. This group is for both male and female adults (21+). Diversity among the cultural and national origins of members is both an expected and valued component of the emerging membership base.
Why should I join this group?
Though it cannot be certain, it appears as though we only live once. Although down time is important, the nights spent watching TV and mindlessly web surfing will most likely not produce any long-lasting memories and promote the development of one’s self. So why do we “waste” so much of time instead of doing the things that we love – those things that will make us happy, strong, and healthy? Sometimes we become too comfortable with our status quo to the extent that we forget to live! Herein lies the value of a group intended to free us from the chains imposed by our own very hands.
For those who are new to the group (which everyone is at this point), it is common to be intimidated and fearful of the unknown. Rest assured that any anxiety and apprehension about joining will be curbed as members immediately are welcomed and challenging activities are pursued! Sometimes, it is useful to contact a member prior to a meet-up so that some sense of a connection and familiarity can ease the (very normal) anxiety associated with something new.
What can this group offer?
You may pursue outdoor fitness activities as an end in themselves, or rather, as a means to end, such as weight loss or enhanced cardiovascular health. Regardless of your particular reason for participation, the group can provide a supportive atmosphere for fulfilling your own personal goals. Having said this, this group is primarily for fun and member organizers are not trained health or fitness experts.
Does membership cost anything?
There are no membership fees and there are no commercial interests at play. The only costs that will be associated with participation are those related to the activities themselves, which may include, for example, access fees and parking fees.
Do I need to car to participate?
We will carpool for events that are outside of the downtown area. Our current default meeting spot is Library and Archives Canada at 395 Wellington Street.
