Photo Critique - 2013/03

By popular vote I'm rescheduling the event. If I see it is popular, we can make it a regular event.

The process is simple, we get together in a friendly environment, all bring a few images and we learn from each other.

The Greenfield's Pub has a huge screen and a projector so I'll plug in a laptop and be able to show each image, get feedback and ideas and demonstrate people's suggestions as we go. (Cropping, Lightning, darkening, sharping ... on the fly.

Bring along 2 or 3 images you'd like to have reviewed. We'll process as many as time allows. I won't be singling you out unless you want to. We'll just project an image and open the floor to commentary. Where appropriate, we'll manipulate the images in real time, making the little adjustments that sometimes make the big difference.

  • Bring your images on a USB key
  • Identify your images as 1-name, 2-name, 3-name
  • We'll do all the "1" images 1st then we'll do all the "2"s once everyone has had a turn, then 3
so the one that is most important to you should be 1st etc
  • I suggest you also label your key to avoid mix-ups (lots of Kingston 2 gigs keys out there)
  • While the into topic is travel the images need not be travel - just bring an image you want honest feedback on
  • Yes you can come even if you don't have 3 images or even if you have zero images and just wanna learn

Looking forward to seeing lots of you there

Good opportunity to get an outside opinion on your photos. It was unfortunate that the images did not show all the detail that you see on a computer screen but that was the projectors fault - not sure if there is a way around that.

Thank you Mike and Shawn! I know that it wasn't the intent but I learned a few LightRoom tricks while you were editing Mike which I'm anxious to try out now ;-).

Absolutely loved this. Sure there were screen issues but Mike took advantage of it and gave a quick tutorial on screen calibration. Super job Mike!

Great meetup. I enjoyed the format. The setup could have been a bit better in terms of photo reproduction on the screen. But it worked OK nonetheless. I might consider hosting similar event for a small group at home in the future. I have a large screen and I can Airplay from my iMac situated in the same room.

Good range of submissions a nice networking opportunity too. A more intimate venue might have been better.

A pub you say... I guess I'll have to keep the fact that it's a public place in mind when I select my images.

Hey folks - I didn't realize this date was a holiday when I booked it. So with the turnout lower then projected I'm going to suggest we move the date to March 11. I'm also curious regarding the main draw. Is it travel topic or Photo Critiques. Would help me in planning future sessions. So please respond to the Poll I created at ...

March 11 is possible but since I get back from India on the 10th I could be pretty jet lagged.

I am a new member to Meetup, and I am looking forward to learning new techniques and meeting fellow enthusiastic photographers. I just need to pay someone so I can attend the meet on the 18th!

Great idea, but I have a Board meeting. Next time!

Speaking of which, what about something on a more regular basis? Monthly critique meetings, anyone?

While I will not be spending a lot of time on a critique night explaining the intricacies of photo manipulation nor doing detail edits involving masking, layers etc. ill certainly be going quick global adjustments which for many people will seem like pure magic.
