Ottawa Downtown Photography Scavenger Hunt

  • Sep 14, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • The fountain at York and Sussex streets

Update:    All the paper work is printed, everything is good to go. 29 attending, looks good, weather looks good. See you all at 1:00pm Today :-)

We will meet at the Fountain at York and Sussex (see attached map location) at 1:00pm on Saturday the 14th of September.

At that time I will give you one sheet of paper that will include the rules, the list of subjects/items for the hunt and the post-event instructions to have your scavenger hunt pictures scored.

It won't be a "race" type scavenger hunt. You basically will have 4 hrs to wonder around and hunt for the items/subjects.

In the mean time here is what you need to participate.

 - You (you can bring companions, dogs, cats etc...)

 - A digital camera. (you can also shoot on film, if you are willing to scan and then post.)

 - your wits, skills, photography talents, and personal charm.

Once we are ready to go, you can wonder off on your own, build a team or group/s (although every single person would submit their own photos).

This is my first hosting and I'm open to suggestions, and if I forgot something please do not hesitate to mention it. (although I have the hunt parts worked out pretty good and it's a secret until d-day).

Thank you all and see you there! :)

Reg

ps. If it all goes well and it's popular. I will probably host an other one in the near future.

Thank you to all 12 participants. The photos are sent to the judges and I'm definitively sure it's going to be a very close race! Will try to get the results to you as soon as possible.

Is it ok to post some other pictures from that day now? I had a few "almosts" for some of the categories....

    • Reg M.

For sure Debbie... fill it up! You're the winner, you can do what ever you want ;-)

    THE RESULTS ARE IN!

First of all, I would like to thank everybody for participating. It was lots of fun and all the photos submitted are great!
3 x Judges where used in the scoring. One is a semi-pro photographer, one is an amateur photographer, and the last one has no photography experience although enjoy looking at photos. They scored the photos without conferring. :-)
Please remember that this is for fun, and that also, like food and music, photography tastes are subjective. :-)))

Here are the results: (it was very close.. the top 5 scores are less than 10 points apart)
The winner of the Ottawa Downtown Photography Scavenger Hunt is: Debbie Pinard
The runner up is: Wojciech Kozlowski

The 3 x best single photos are: (in order)
    1: Trish Leclair 07 - Laughter
    2: Cynthia 07 - Laughter
    3: Debbie Pinard - #2 Interesting Structure

Thanks again to all who participated, it was a great day.

Perhaps if there is interest, I will host another one in the spring.

I'm running late. Is there a way I can join you later? You can also call me at 613.260.9091. Thanks.

  • P

Sorry still don't understand the extend of the event

    September 14, 2013

    • Reg M.

Hello P. Basically I give you a list of items/subjects to take pictures of. And you walk around the downtown area and take pictures of these, then you submit the pictures to this site and judges will evaluates all the pictures and declare a winner. It's a just for fun event to allow you be forced to take pictures of what you may or may not be used to! Hope this helps.

I've hurt my neck and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it to the scavenger hunt today. So, if I'm not there on time, I won't be coming. No need to wait for me. Have fun everybody! I look forward to seeing the results.

Hope your feeling better quick. BTW... a little market visit can help the aches and pains. :)

Due to weather I am not well.. and I won't be able to make it.. sorry for the last minute change in the plans

  • Trish L.

So I have a couple questions.

    1. Is this grab your sheet and go.
    2. Is there a planned meet after for a beverage?

    1 · September 10, 2013

    • Reg M.

Hi Trish. Very good questions. 1. Basically yes, but you do not have to go run alone and it won't be a "race" type. you basically will have 4 hrs to wonder around and hunt for the items/subjects. (I'll remember to put that info in the details above, thank you) 2. That is a great idea. I'm open to suggestions for sure. I do not go in that area very often. would you, or anybody, would like to suggest a nearby location for an after shoot beverage?

      1 · September 10, 2013

    • Trish L.

Heart and Crown or the Earl of Sussex are both pretty easy to get to and would have room. There are lots of good places down there!!

      1 · September 11, 2013

  • Reg M.

Aslo, since Trish brought some good questions, I would like to point out that since I'm not actually participating in the hunt itself, I will be available to help anybody with camera setting etc. Although I lack the experience with photography "art" in general, I have very good technical knowledge and understanding of the tools. :-)

    1 · September 10, 2013

    • Janice F.

Great to know, Reg, because I'm the exact opposite!

      1 · September 10, 2013

I'll be happy to help if you require. See you there.

In my enthusiasm to go out and shoot, I didn't realize that this event is the same day that I'm participating in a charity ride "Cruise, don't bruise" - bikers against violence. If there is another one, I would love to attend it!

    September 10, 2013

    • Reg M.

I'm sure you'll have a great time at the charity ride Christine, and it's a good cause. I'll be sure to announce it, if there is an other one soon. Cheers.
