Street Photography Practice

Let's have fun and practice our street photography skills, including the use of flash after sunset. We will both ask people for their portraits, and take candids. Focal lengths of 50mm and under are best, to engage with our subjects (although any lens can be used).

Thank you Phil for hosting this, I had a good time :) It seems the chilly night kept a lot of people indoors. I still had a good time and it was great to meet new people - going for a beer afterwards was the perfect way to end the evening!

My model friend would like to join as a portrait subject, would that be alright if I bring her too? any one who photographs her will be asked to share digital files with her. She has experience.

I've seen some of your work Philip, I think you're quite accomplished. Is it possible that street photography might mean something a little bit different to some people... and would urban photography be a better way to describe that. Doing photography on the street, capturing street scenes, the ambience, and yes, people too, but maybe from a distance. whether using a long lens or a wide-angle. Or using a model, friend, whatever as a subject in that urban environment. I'm a bit shy so I find it hard to approach a stranger. I really enjoy the genre though.

      1 · September 12, 2013

    • Philip R.

Terry - it can be whatever you want with whatever lens! You must do what makes you happy. I don't believe in rules in photography, but I think street does have an accepted definition. Actually, it doesn't have to be of people; you can take scenes, objects, etc. I'm also shy but somehow overcome it behind a camera, if I'm in the right mood. There are days when it just doesn't happen. They say you have to force yourself out of your comfort zone, and I believe that. After three years I've never had more of a problem apart from being yelled at a few times, and to me, being sworn at is worth a good photo, lol! I generally don't take street people, unless I talk to them and we both agree. I go with my gut on whether to ask permission, or not. There are a lot of tricks, I can show you some tomorrow if you like! Cheers!

I read about Vivian Maier's work in the Globe and Mail on Monday, now I'm freshly inspired about street photography. I might see you tomorrow.

I'm interested in joining in, but I'll be late as well (probably 6:30-7:00). I'll text once I'm there so we can meet up.

Do u have my cell #?

      September 11, 2013

  • Philip R.

Just a note - city hall is quite a ways back from the street (Elgin), so to be more precise, we'll meet in the court yard at the front door of city hall, facing Elgin street. That's where there are some stone sculptures.

I have flash in my camera , I that ok if I use that

    September 9, 2013

An on camera flash can have terrific effects when used for nights time street photography... First or Second curtain Slow... Trigger a slave ...

  • Madeleine

Thanks to all who took the time to give recommendations based on the flash they use. A friend offered to lend me his flash so that I can do a first experiment. This is awesome because it means that I will be able to join the group on Friday evening. Count me in!

Would love to join but do not own a flash. I have been considering purchasing one but would hate to rush it. Do you have a recommendation for a good link for info on flashes for a Nikon?

    September 8, 2013

    • Philip R.

The SB700 is a great Nikon flash - check out http://en.nikon.ca/Ni...

      September 9, 2013

    • Terry

I'm having a great time with the Yongnuo YN-560 III for Nikon lately. It only works on manual settings so it's no good if you want to use TTL but for bounce flash or off-camera strobist stuff it's perfect. Got it on amazon.ca for $100 delivered priority from a vendor in Toronto. It does work mounted on the camera, you just adjust the power manually. It has a built-in optical slave and a built-in radio receiver for Yongnuo triggers.

I love street shoots, is there any cost

    September 9, 2013

    • Philip R.

No Samina - just the cost of getting there and parking! :)

      September 9, 2013

    • Shawn Michael M.

Coffee, water, etc... Parking on the street after 5:30 pm is usually free, although it may be restricted 'till during rush-hour.

      September 9, 2013

Got something else scheduled that evening so I can't attend but I would have loved to join the group for this meetup. Have a fun shoot!
