2 Day Interactive Photography Workshop

Overview:

This is a two day workshop specially designed for street photography in Ottawa, Canada. I have spent over 100 hours putting together a balanced agenda that will improve not only your street photography but in general as well.  The content in this workshop is extensive and there will be a lot of interactive participation.  Some of you may be nervous reading this.  Perhaps shy or scared of the unknown.  The first MAJOR step for your success of this workshop starts with you.  Take a deep breath. Understand that if you are nervous, that means you're are about to learn something new outside of your comfort zone.  I ask that you trust me with the responsibility in guiding you a positive direction where your nervousness will go out the window within the first 10 minutes of the workshop.

Why Attend?

Here are some common questions and comments I have heard from past students:

• "I'm curious and always wanted to try street photography but don't know really where to start"

• "I need to learn how to overcome my fear and boost my confidence... I'm too shy"

• "I'm not sure what equipment to use."

• "My photos are missing something, I need to see more creatively."

• "I just wanted to try something different and mix things up.  I'm bored"

• "I want to meet new like minded people and make new friends."

• "I want to become a 'Streetog'"

Agenda

Day 1 - Saturday 1pm: Indoor Class With Overhead Projector (3 hours)  Here are some topic highlights.

• What is street photography

• Legal and privacy issues

• What equipment do you need

• Prediction and anticipation techniques

• Understanding exposure for street photography

• What camera modes to use

• Composition - Learning to see

• Streamline your editing process

• Processing Techniques

• Zone focusing

• Breaking the rules

• Conquering your fear

• Anonymous critique of your photos in class

• Group discussions and war stories

• In class group exercises

Day 2 - Sunday 1pm: Hitting the Streets (3 hours)

• Practice what you have learned

• Work in small groups out in the street

• One on one support from me if required

• Joining the official Streetog Ottawa Facebook group to post your photos and get constructive feedback

Location:

The location will be somewhere within Ottawa and will ensure bus routes will be available. Final RSVP numbers will determine the venue.  I will likely try to stick to a central Ottawa location.  Day two street photography practice will be downtown Ottawa the following day at 1pm.

The Cost:

I realize that the fee I'm asking may prohibit some to attend.  I have spent over 100 hours preparing this workshop and have given multiple "beta workshops" where I have tweaked the content that will ensure value for your money.  While I'm not looking for a profit here and not knowing the final RSVP numbers, I want to ensure that I can secure a warm, comfortable place to rent for the workshop class.  Lastly, I strongly believe you will get more out of this two day workshop then an $80 book that is likely to miss many of the key components.  Please note that the meetup fee is not refundable if you are a "no show".  Please think before you RSVP and commit to the date as there is extensive planning and prepayment for the facilities that I am responsible for.

Skill Level Required:

Beginner to advanced.

My Background

I've been hobbyist photographer for about 15 years.  A street photographer for about 4 years.  I've have taken pro workshops and spent 1000's of hours researching this genre and interacting with like minded people.  You do not have to like or want to produce photos like mine to benifit from this workshop.  I will show you the raw tools to find your own style and start you well on your journey of this highly addictive genre.

Note:

You do not need a fancy camera, multiple lenses or a ton of other gear for this workshop.   Your brain and the tools you learn from this workshop is far more important than gear.  My street camera is small with a fixed lens.  Beginners welcomed.  Advanced photogs, I ask that you open your mind and accept some new challenges that will push you out of your comfort zone.

    Hello fellow Streetogs!

Toronto mayor Rob Ford is in Ottawa today, 26 Feb 2014.

Congrats class... you all graduated. I'm saying this publicly because the gallery just blows me away. You all soaked up the theory and just rocked it on Sunday. You are all officially "Streetogs". Please apply to this street photography FB group and continue to post your work. https://www.facebook.com/groups/604560959563916/

Also, feel free to email me with any questions you have in the future. Thanks all. Cheers. :-)

Had a great time, on a sunny afternoon, taking great pictures and sharing a fun time with good folks. Jeff provided excellent guidance and advice in dealing with the public, a key part of street photography. Learned how to get in close and made good use of my wide-angle lens, which used to be reserved for landscapes.

Jeff, when did you say you were planning the Montreal street photography? LOL!

Probably toward the end of April. :-)

Hi Jeff. Thank you for the opportunity to interact with other photographers and teaching us to get closer to the public. I gained new techniques & tricks. If you could send slides to those that attended, it would be much appreciated. I look forward to the next workshop you offer. Thank you again.

Wow, a new world just open to me! Jeff thank you so much for this wonderful workshop and to introduce me to street photography. Putting the theory in practice the next day was awesome. I over come my fear of photographing people in the street but over that it was super exciting. What an awesome way to interact with people and demystified that we live in a cold and non-interactive society. The interactions that I experiences with "my subject" where fun, joyful, curious, engaging and simply humane. Definitely an experience I want to repeat and a stream of photography that I want to keep on exploring. Again, thanks for this awesome course. Brigitte

    Hi Jeff

I think my photos posted twice and I don't know how to delete the duplicates. The first one is 'contrast' & 'leading lines'. The second pix of the cute guy in the restaurant is 'triangles'. I didn't like the b & w so I used the sepia tone.

Awesome fun yesterday! Thanks a million - you're class was exceptional!
Renee you are an awesome partner in a group of terrific people!

In-class portion was interesting, it provided a good baseline for me to further study and explore street photography.

    Thank you Jeff !

To those who have registered, I have central Ottawa meeting room booked. A week before the workshop, I will email the location and a couple of pre-workshop assignments. :-)

    February 6, 2014

    • Richard

HI Jeff. I am not sure if this is the same email issue but I have not received the pre-workshop assignment

      February 20, 2014

    • Jeff G.

It was in the email I sent you this morning direct to your email. You'll see a section that says "Homework" at the bottom.

Everyone, just a reminder that if you haven't received an email from me, contact me at [masked] I'm asking all of you to forward three photos for anonymous critique during the workshop that will help me cater to your specific learning objectives.

I found it, as suggested, in the junk folder. Wonder whats up with that?

      February 20, 2014

    • Jeff G.

I think it's because I use the built in Meetup Organizer "email group" option for our activity. Your mail client doesn't like something about how it appears. Future meetups, I will flat out ask for email addresses in the sign up process so I can contact you all directly right away. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi: Do you have a location yet? I'm on a time frame, I have to be back in east end near the Costco shortly after 4:00 pm! on Saturday! Thanks

    • Jeff G.

The meeting room is around the China Town area. I've emailed the formal address to those who have RSVP'd as I'd like to keep the address private to the group. Cheers.

  • brigitte

Hi group, I register late and have not received the location info for this upcoming Saturday workshop. Could someone kindly send me the info? Brigitte

    February 20, 2014

    • Jeff G.

Hi Brigitte. I've sent the info twice to the whole group. I'm thinking my email messages when sent through meetup.com might be getting blocked on your end as some others have replied. Please check your junk folder. Send me a direct email to [masked] and I'll reply with the details as well. You have a homework assignment before Saturday that I need to tell you about as well. :-)

Aww I really want to do this work shop, but that's the weekend we are moving to our condo... will there be another one Jeff?

    1 · December 20, 2013

    • Jeff G.

At this time, I'm not 100% sure. For those who have taken my workshops in the past (such as yourself), I am reviewing plans for a very special street photography meetup. Details coming soon.
