Late Late Night Shooting Downtown.

I'm just putting this out there. I'd like to go do some night shooting downtown, using the Alexandra bridge and a few spots around the Art Gallery, and any others you can suggest or would like to try.

The bridge is usually very heavy traffic during the early evening hours so it's best to do long exposures much, much later in the night when traffic has calmed-and there are less people running past making too much vibration, as well the winds normally die down a bit at night too which helps with long exposures.

So my proposal is to get a few people together to go shooting, after midnight on a Saturday night. It's always safer in a group to go shooting at night.  I recommend parking under Rideau Centre.  The plan is to stick together the entire time and walk back to the parking area afterwards.  Anybody interested?  We can meet up on the Mackenzie King Bridge over the canal, and go from there.

Awesome event. It was one of the best attended meetups I have ever been to. Reading comments posted before, during and after the shoot you can see a huge level of enthusiasm an excitement from all. You scored a real win Josh, excellent work. Do another soon my friend.

So which one is first the National Gallery for the bridge. I'm assuming the National Gallery as Major's Hill Park its not really fun to walk through at this time of night. In any case I'm here...

Good morning everyone. Nice meeting everyone last night. The bridge was silent, the sky was clear and there was no breeze. Excellent night for landscape photography. I am disappointed that Shawn thought my idea of lighting steel wool would attract the 'wrong' people. LOL! I guess a wooden bridge would not be that appropriate. Come on summer!

    March 22, 2014

    • Ian

I am up for some light painting and similar nonsense. We could maybe combine it with a flash/multi-flash set up.

I also need a lot more practice. We should try to schedule another time soon. Is anyone free during the week? The next two Friday nights we have company. Is anyone interested in getting together to just practice? I'm getting a tripod.

    March 23, 2014

  • Tammy

I still need a lot more practice with night shots. I really only got a couple that I was happy with. However, getting out inspired me and I spent part of today out and about getting shot of graffiti around town.

    March 23, 2014

    1 · March 22, 2014

    • Ian

Crap... I'll try again. To start, go to YouTube and enter the version of PhotoShop (PS) you have and the word tutorial. There are other ways but that's the easiest to start with the basics. There are hundreds of websites with great information.

    1 · March 22, 2014

If you were there and have not posted, put something up as soon as you're done post processing!
If you think your shot is not good, post it and ask how to fix it for next time. If you see a shot you want to emulate, ask that the settings be posted or that the post processing methodology be explained. Just 'cause the shoot is over, the learning goes on.
If your shot is gorgeous, post it and bask in the praise.
If you find a shot you like and don't know why (happens to me a lot) it's probably because for whatever reason, your composition makes it work. Find out by asking.
There are people in the gang (I am not one of them) who are technically far advanced who can explain pretty much anything.
Again, what a great evening with super folks.
Look forward to meeting you again.

Regret I am pulling out of this meet up. Moved too much furniture and walked too much today, and I find that I am bushed. Have a great time.

I will bring some remote shutter releases. I seem to have collected a few... I cannot promise about battery condition on 2 of them but they should be okay...
I am bringing a tripod but is anyone else interested in doing a walkabout as well? I have been quite successful doing "hand held" shots of people and I can run really fast.
    JK!
I have never had too much trouble. Most folks are very nice.

I can help a little with settings as I have shot at night a few times and got good results. I am better with Canon but I think I can muddle through on other brands. :)
John, I have your clip-on sun glasses and will bring them 'cause I know you'll want to look cool. Should I bring some extra batteries for you?

    March 21, 2014

    • Ian

Sure. It takes a watch battery of some kind. I also have a manual and 2 other types for the 3 pin Canon releases.

      March 21, 2014

    • Shawn Michael M.

Oddly enough, I actually have one I'm not using... As I do not own a Canon.

Hi! could I borrow a remote shutter release, for my Canon 50D, for a couple of slow shutter night shots? Thanks in advance.

    March 21, 2014

    • Angus G.

I have used a wide broccoli elastic and a small piece of wood on the BULB setting before. I then open the shutter by taking off the lens cap. All on a tripod of course.

This is my first attempt at one of these meetups so I'm hoping I'm not taking too big of a step at once since I am really new to using anything but the auto setting on my Nixon D80. If anyone could give me a few pointers, that would be awesome.

    March 21, 2014

    • Ross B.

I'll also be shooting with a D80. I'll be happy to point out my limited knowledge.

      1 · March 21, 2014

Tammy, I'm in the same boat- always on auto. I'm leaping in to try. It sounds fun!

    March 21, 2014

Hi Tammy, I'm in the same boat as you!!!! I need lots of pointers, but I'm really excited about going out and giving it a try!!!

    March 21, 2014

  • John W.

My camera is a Canon SX50 is it suitable for this activity or should I pass?

    March 21, 2014

    • Jasmin F.

Come, there's ways to make this work. If need be, you can use my tripod.

      March 21, 2014

    • Shawn Michael M.

The SX50 is a full feature DSLR with Manual, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority, even a Handheld Night Scene to "take clear and steady pictures at night without the use of a tripod." So let it off its leash and have fun.
