Local Photo Contest!: "Home is where the heart is."

  • Jan 5, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Location:
A place of your choosing. This is a virtual assignment meaning that there is no meeting place. You will start snapping now to collect your best shots to upload in our event gallery, January 5th. This contest is for our group only who RSVP.

Objective:
Try to best capture an image that says "Home is where the heart is". This can mean anything from the house itself to family related photos. Try to be as creative and original as possible. I won't post an example photo as I don't want to bias anyone's ideas. The winning photos will be chosen by Jane and Jon Pick. There is no official gathering for this challenge. You are encouraged to discuss ideas, ask questions and help others through the discussion section of this meet-up. The winning photos must be taken between November 16th and January 5th. On January 5th, this meetup event will allow you to start posting your photos. You will have two weeks after the posted date to upload all your photos. January 20th, the winning photos will be announced by me (judged by Jane and John Pick) through a group email. So sign up and start snapping something that says "Home is where the heart is". You don't have to be a pro! Good luck!

Contest Prizes:
Jane and Jon (from Royal LePage - http://www.jjpick.com) have graciously offered prizes for this challenge. The top three photos will be published in a printed newsletter that is mailed out and also on the their website! You will be able to then say you're a "published" photographer!

LETTER FROM THE JUDGES: PART 1

    Hi Jeff

We were so glad that the contest was well received and very much enjoyed reviewing these wonderful photos. It was difficult having to make a decision for only the top three, as we could appreciate the heart that was put into all of these submissions. We chose the theme "Home is where the heart is" to keep it subjective as home can mean many things to different people which we saw in each of these entries.

The winning photo was #9 in the album, which was submitted by Thomas Watson. This was the picture of the baby holding the Christmas Tree decoration with the picture of the house painted on it. The moment was beautifully captured and conveyed the theme of home.

The photo that we chose for 2nd place was submitted by Barbara White which was #48 in the album. It is a photo of her families memorabilia beautifully laid out to represent the memories of events over time.

    1 · January 24, 2013

  • Jeff G.

LETTER FROM THE JUDGES: PART 2

These memories were of her parents and time spent with them during her younger years. The significance of these items and the placement came ardently through in the photo. Finally, the photo that we chose for 3rd place was the submission by Rick Millette which was #27 in the album. It is the beautiful photo of his Austrian Sheppard relaxing on the brown leather sofa. The colors of the Christmas decorations and warm tones thru-out the photo were exceptional.

  • Jeff G.

LETTER FROM THE JUDGES: PART 3

It was not an easy task to chose the top 3 pictures which struck a special note in our hearts. Every submission was beautifully done and expressed the theme in their own personal way. We wish to pass along honourable mentions to all the remaining photographers who submitted their photo's for the contest. They were all exceptional and we appreciated all of the time, effort, and creativity that went into them. We look forward to meeting with the winners in the very near future to congratulate them.

Again, a Special Congratulations to all of you from Jon and myself.

    Warm Regards

So the winners have been chosen. You know on those game shows when you're waiting to find out if the answer is correct or not... and you hear the heart beat in the back ground, moody music... well imagine that here lol :-D Jon is just confirming a few things with me before the winners are identified on here.

    January 23, 2013

  • Kim H

well, by now, there must be a decision???

    January 22, 2013

    • Kim H

Jeff....I really don't expect to win... there are many pictures posted that are so beautiful...but it sure would be nice all the same lol :)

      January 22, 2013

    • Jeff G.

Kim, those who didn't upload a photo should be the ones not expecting to win. Regardless if you get a prize or not, those who posted are all winners. You joined a challenge, (I consider my meet ups missions) thought carefully about your entries and put it out there for the world to see. I love being in this group when our gallery is so populated with awesome stuff. Mission accomplished!

Jeff this was a great idea! Thank you for putting this together. Looking forward to new themes that we can delve in to that allow us to explore more techniques and expand our areas of interest in photography.

  • Ginny F.

Need clarification about the format. Do submissions have to be in raw, unprocessed or can they be a post processed jpg?

    January 5, 2013

    • Jeff G.

JPG is fine for this contest. Processing is allowed. Just ask that all photos were taken by the contestant (in the event there is some layering / photoshop stuff entered)

      January 5, 2013

  • Jay Roblee P.

I was just out shooting my photo...again! and well once i brought it in to edit it.... I shot it at 4.5mp!!! I forgot to switch it to RAW... are there size requirements for the pics? maybe ill try again tomorrow AM.. hopefully the rain will stop...

    1 · January 4, 2013

    • Jeff G.

Awesome lesson learned here... check your settings before you shoot. I lost count how many times I did something like this. Just last night I was shooting for 20 minutes when I realized I was shooting in what I thought was auto focus mode but was in manual. I would say that the image needs to look acceptable as a 8x10 printed which is around the 4MP mark. On a side note: if your photo is a little noisy, out of focus or not framed well... it doesn't mean you don't have a chance to win the contest. Case in point... check out this photo that went viral. http://fstoppers.com/...

It says the photos have to be taken between November 16 and January 5 - are photos taken at any point tomorrow still eligible? I'm a little late in joining this one and want to make sure if I take a photo tomorrow afternoon I'm still ok :) Thanks!

    January 4, 2013

    • Jeff G.

I am going to send a group email on this subject.

Contest Tip: no people... creative shots of "something", "somehow" regardless of gear.

    January 1, 2013

    • Shawn Michael M.

Just a side note on the"Add Photos" button. They don't appear magically at meetup time Plus one minute. I could take am hour or more.

Too bad I can't spell. "It could take an hour or more" so don't panic

      January 4, 2013

    • Jeff G.

Some times the best shots are the last minute unplanned ones.

      January 4, 2013

  • Ron L.

I wouldn't rule out pictures including people.

    1 · January 3, 2013

    • Jeff G.

Agreed. Any and all photographs are welcome for this meetup that will become a part of our group's own photo gallery. ***My next comments are for those who signed with the sole purpose of the contest. Think of the judges like clients. Look at their website, their business. Keeners would of found a way to obtain a copy of one of their previous newsletters. Photographic process doesn't always soley depend on the equipment. I'm willing to bet that most photos will be of people - which is fine and I'm sure will be amazing. The challenge is to make your photo / subject stand out and more importantly capture the theme. I caution beginners to not fall into the trap of head and shoulder model shots against a bokeh of xmas tree lights. This doesn't capture the theme. ***Disclaimer: I'm not the judge. I am not a pro photographer. These are just my opinions in hopes to generate some good photography discussions.

  • S.Diddy S.

    Can you Photoshop the pictures?

    December 28, 2012

    • Jeff G.

Yes as long as all source images were taken within the time frame of the contest and created by the contestant. No stock photography.

      December 28, 2012

Great contest. Thanks to you, Jeff, for organizing this and to the Picks for the prizes.

  • Stacey

If anyone needs a model (pick me!) lol or if your looking for a 'couples' shoot, my boyfriend and I make pretty sexy photos ;) lol

    December 12, 2012

    • Jeff G.

Stacey, thank you for offering to help out! The more models willing to exchange time for photos the better!!! One thing though about this particular meetup subject: The photos will be published in a public newsletter that is mailed out to many homes and also on their company website. The newsletter has children's puzzles and stuff as part of the content. So "sexy" might not be the best options for this one. There's no doubt that others will see your interests and create a bazillion more meetups better suited for those type of shots. Love your ambition - kudos to you!

      December 13, 2012

    • Stacey

lol, I can also do cute and "Dove" like model too! :D

All, I'm not sure if I understand the "not going" folks listed. This meetup occurs over a couple of months. Maybe you lost your home and/or heart?

Thanks for doing this Jeff! Great concept and the prizes are just a bonus!! I look forward to snapping some pics, and seeing the other entries.

I am behind this all the way, regardless of what I have written in other posts throughout this site and not withstanding what I may write here, in the future. To quote Marshall McLuhan "I don't necessarily agree with everything I say"
So, what's the fine print? Do all the images entered become the property of the sponsors or is this a one-time single use applicable only to the three winning images. Do we need model releases? None of this is a problem, just good to know upfront stuff. :-) this is me, being happy and wanting to stay that way.
I also want to thank Jane and Jon for being forthcoming with intensives.

Just an aside while my brain is taking a vacation, wouldn't it be special if one of the wining images was of a Thoreauvian setting??? Sorry, senior moment there...

    November 16, 2012

    • Jeff G.

Excellent points Shawn. Photography isn't just about lenses and gear, that's for sure. I think it will be a good idea that I update the pre-requisites that the winners will have to provide model releases for non-profit publication if/when people are in the photo. In the case of this contest, photos will not become the property of the judges and limited use for the purpose advertised in this meetup. For those wondering, I was the one that approached our judges and launched this idea. My original request as a prize was to just get published in their printed newsletter. They decided to add the monetary prizes which is awesome! On a side note, I'm am trying to organize more meetups like this for reasons stated in my forum thread: http://www.meetup.com...]

Terrific effort on your part Jeff, I'm sure we all appreciate the effort.
