Winter Nature Walk and Photography at the Arboretum and Fletcher Wildlife Garden

We will meet at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden parking lot at noon and walk through the grounds where we can photograph pretty Winter scenery as well as visiting the bird feeders for bird pics and feeding the Chickadees by hand. There is a decent chance of spotting and photographing wildlife such as Red Fox, Snowshoe Hare, Squirrels, songbirds, woodpeckers and raptors. Then we will walk through the Arboretum for some great landscape shots and shots of people tobogganing down the hill. If Dow's Lake is open for skating we can go down and get some shots of the people skating as well. We will finish back at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden parking lot.

Bring water, dress warmly in layers and wear winter boots. Expect to be outdoors for at least 3 hours, possibly 4.

A tripod is suggested, at the very least a monopod would be handy. A telephoto lense would be good to have for getting bird shots and action pics of people tobogganing, as well as a wide-angle lense for the great landscape shots to be had.

This is a free meetup, focused on meeting like-minded people and doing something we like: photographing nature and wildlife. No formal instruction will be given. Participants are encouraged to share ideas, also those with more experience and knowledge of photography are encouraged to help those who are less experienced. I have much experience using camera's and will help anyone asking for assistance. I consider the meetup a success if everyone goes home with some good images.

There is no rain date for this event, if the weather is good we will go, if it's a blizzard or rainy day the meetup will be considered cancelled. Plan to be at the parking lot for 11:50 AM to get your equipment ready, we start at 12 noon. Parking is free.

I very much liked this event. Thank you Joshua for sharing this event/hobby/beautiful place with us. Sun and cloud combination offered nice contrast for birds and landscape shots. Wonderful group of photographers, it was nice meeting you all.

Had such a great time today! Thanks so much for organising this event Josh! :-). Was great meeting more members of the group and I didn't jinx the weather after all. lol

The weather cooperated, the sun came out just in time. We didn't have as many cooperative birds as I would have liked, but still there were many good photo-ops.

Going to try to come! It's a work day for me though. I'll RSVP tomorrow about an hour prior to. Won't really know until then. I usually hibernate in the winter but looks like it'll be a nice day tomorrow so kind of hard to pass up :-)

Sorry everyone, I was never made host by Ottawa Photography Meetup, so I can't send an email to everyone who rsvp'd. As I said in my post two days ago, if it's freezing rain today, the meetup will be postponed until Monday at noon. I have in fact changed the date to Monday at 12pm.

    January 11

Can someone please call me on [masked] if this event is cancelled? I am heading out and won't have Internet access, otherwise I will be there at 12!

    January 11

  • Megan

Driving (and walking!) in freezing rain makes me nervous... If the event isn't cancelled I will likely make a game time decision on whether or not to attend.

    January 11

  • Kathy McEwen

    I would prefer Monday also

    January 11

  • Sivaruban

Monday 12pm fine with me as well.

    January 11

  • Roy Wallace

I'm not a huge fan of freezing rain :( I would prefer Monday where forecast is for sunny weather.

    January 11

    • Karl Butler

I'm in agreement with the others about not liking freezing rain. Monday will work for me if it starts no later than 1pm.

      January 11

  • Cheryl Baxter

Me too...I won't be attending. But like Marc, will come if it's rescheduled for Monday. :)

    January 11

  • Marc Grégoire

I'm a no show for Friday but likely to show up Monday. I'll put my name back on the list if this gets postponed.

    January 11

  • Sivaruban

Weather forecast says its still going to rain 1 - 6 mm all afternoon with 90% chance, are we still on this meet up or is it postponed for next monday. Please let us know. thx

    January 11

  • Joshua McCullough

I'm looking at the weather network forecast. It says freezing rain for Friday, but we never really know with the weather these days. If it is indeed freezing rain on Friday, I will postpone the event until Monday at noon.
