Regional Puppet Slam Mini-Festival

For a day of puppet slam workshops and the PNW Regional meeting, with a puppet slam that night!
Here's our schedule:

9:00 doors open for exhibitors and workshop presenters

9:30 doors open for attendees

10:00 Puppet workshop opens (all day)

Gavin Cummins will assist and insist the quick and dirty style of puppet creation. Ideal for creating a piece of the Open Mic Puppet Night.

10:00 Workshop Slot 1 (50min)

a) Sound and Music for the puppet theater with Rob Witmer
Robertson Witmer, composer, sound designer and puppeteer will help guide you through the process of creating the auditory world of your puppet production. Microphone techniques, sound effects playback and music accompaniment will be addressed, along with specific examples of using software such as Garage Band and Qlab to support your production. In addition, methods of working with composers and live musicians will be discussed.
b) Paper to puppet with Katie McClenahan
Katie McClenahan takes you through the process of creating her renowned puppet slam piece “The Great Clawdini”

1:00 Workshop Slot 2 (1:45 min)

a). Stuffed Animal to Marionette with Elly Leaverton
Learn to make a working marionette out of stuffed animals. Materials need and limited space.
b) Viewpoints and puppetry with Gavin Cummins

A language for creating more dynamic stage pictures with your puppets.

3:00 Workshop Slot 3 (1:45 min)

a) Marionette Techniques with Dmitri Carter
Dmitri Carter of the Carter Family Marionettes will lead you the class through a variety of marionette techniques including: Sicilian, Chinese, West African, vertical control and trick marionettes.

b) Beginning puppetry with Rachel Jackson
In this fun, dynamic class, you'll learn the foundations of good stage puppetry - focus, physical commitment and basic puppet operation. We'll work on how to make your puppet seem alive and connect with the audience. You'll get lots of hands-on time with professional arm and rod puppets plus a simple practice puppet to take home so you can keep working on your skills.
