The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

A treasure worth killing for. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man name Gutman, and Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett’s coolly glittering gem of detective fiction, a novel that has haunted three generations of readers.

Doug Andrey (book club member) has offered to do a walking tour. We would do in reverse order ending up at John's Grill where we could have lunch/dinner. I would suggest that we start at 12 or so on Saturday or a Sunday to do it. I will be the tour guide.

John's Grill, a San Francisco tradition since 1908 is a must on a visit to San Francisco. This landmark was the setting for the Maltese Falcon novel whose author Dashiell Hammett was a regular and mentioned John's Grill in his novel. \n\nIt is a gathering spot for local and national celebrities where one enjoys excellent service and great seafood and steaks at honest prices in a traditional San Francisco atmosphere. Dark panel walls, antiques, white table linens, pictures of old San Francisco, photos of celebrities who frequent the restaurant are all a part of the excitement at this famous grill which was featured in Gourmet and chosen as one of the 10 best in S.F. by Esquire. Dress is casual. We have a full bar as well as an extensive wine list featuring wines from Napa Valley.

Just a few details for tomorrow. The walk is a little over two miles with so wear comfortable shoes and the weather will be good. We will walk first and eat after. Parking is literally across the street at 80 ellis street from John's Grill and is $16 for the day. My cell is[masked] if anyone has any issues tomorrow.

Back just locked up; plus also now that I see we're going to be on a 3-4 hour walking tour and a 15 min hike up Nob Hill, there's no way I could so that. It sounded wonderful; I hope all who attend gave a wonderful time.

    Hi Doug,
I'm going to catch CalTrain/BART to this event. The best schedule has me arriving at the Powell Street BART station at 10:57 and then it's a two block walk to John's Grill so I'll be there shortly after 11:00. Is it possible to get your phone number so I can ring if BART is running late?
I'm halfway through the book and I'm really looking forward to this event. Thanks so much for organizing it.
If anyone wants to coordinate going up together, give me a call or drop me an e-mail.
    Cheers,
    Maggie

    Hi All,

I have finished my plans for our tour on Sunday. It will be a one hour of walking and at least a half hour of looking tour which hits all the highlights of the book with the exception of Brigit's apartment. It is a steep hike of at least 15 minutes literally straight up Nob Hill to her apartment and not very enjoyable from personal experience. This is usually a 3-4 hour tour and I have only included what I think is the most interesting part of it which is relevant to the book. Look forward to seeing you. Doug

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
