Maple Sirip Tour of Sugar Grove Nature Center. $5 CASH ADMISSION.

Please join us for a maple sirip tour at the Sugar Grove Nature Center in Mclean.  The tour is from 9:30 am to Noon.  Cost is $5 per person, cash payable at the time of the tour.  We need to give them a final count by Sunday, February 17th.  If we have time/interest we can explore the other exhibits at the Nature Center and their hiking trails.  Please dress in layers as the tour will be both inside and out and also the trails may be muddy.  We will decide upon a place to go to eat afterwards.

If you have any questions please call Marie at[masked] or Mike at[masked]-2755.

I liked the tour and was so grateful they alternated between colder spots and warmer spots! haha

Nice tour - the presentation, the demo and the presenters themselves..... Was a tour with 'real' presentation as opposed to a lot of those scripted ones I have been to. to Hiking in the crunchy snow with good company was fun, too!!!

The Nature Center did a great presentation that was really hands on. Nice time, the SUN was out and good company!

Here are the directions from Bloomington:
    Directions from Bloomington, IL:
Take I-55 South (toward St. Louis).
Take the Shirley exit (the first exit) #154.
Turn right at the top of the off-ramp, on County Road 34.
Turn left at the T-intersection onto Old Route 66.
Proceed approximately 4.5 miles to Funks Grove Road. Turn right.
Proceed over railroad tracks, and take the first left.
At this point, there will be signs for Sugar Grove Nature Center. Follow this road.
At the Dead End sign, continue straight.
The road will open up to prairie and you will see the nature center buildings on your right.
When you come to the gravel lane, turn right, and proceed to the parking lot.

From Peoria you would take 74 to Bloomington and then take I-55 South.

Because we have had a few cancellations and I RSVP'd for 20, if someone wants to get in on this event I could probably add a few people. Anyone wanting to come just call me at[masked]

We are starting the tour at 9:30, so I'm figuring to leave Peoria at 8:10 a.m... Anybody else need a ride from Peoria?

Carol, here is Jill's response about bringing your dog.

If this were a public program, I’d suggest leaving the dog at home. Since your group will all be together, it is okay with me. Of course, we’d want to avoid having everyone bring their dogs. Leashed dogs are allowed in the Nature Center as well as most trails (even the Department of Natural Resources property to the south of the building. There is a sign that says no dogs, but we do not enforce.) The only place that dogs are not allowed is the patch of woods between the Nature Center and the cemetery, as it is a dedicated nature preserve. We’ll tap on the opposite side of the road, so that will be fine. I’m thinking that it will probably not take the entire 2-1/2 hours, so you will have plenty of time to hike before lunch. There really isn’t much around here as far as restaurants, just a Subway, McDonalds, and Dixie Truck Stop in McLean, so you’ll probably want to head in to Bloomington. Let me know if you come up with any other questions. See you then!

My dog is really good about waiting in the car, so I could do that. How long do you think the indoors portion will be? Also, is anyone coming from Peoria? I could drive since I'd be bringing my dog if others want to ride along and chip in for gas.

Hi Carol, I will call in our final number attending to Jill tomorrow and I will find out the answer to your question at that time. I will post it Monday night.

      February 17, 2013

  • Marie

Hey Carol, now that we are doing the tour I am not sure if the dog would be able to be with you inside the exhibits. The web site specifically says dogs that are leashed are fine on the trails. Would your dog be able to be tied outside if we are inside? I can call Jill on monday and get a specific answer for you. I have not taken the tour so I am not certain.

    February 16, 2013

    • Marie

It does mention that the tour is outside for the majority of the time on the web site. It says pets are welcomed on most trails but must be leashed and remain on the trails. I think it is possible that you might enjoy the tour more without the dog - I am sure where food preparation (maple sirip making) is going on

      they probably limit dogs.

Double-checking -- can a dog be there for all exhibits. Are there some that are indoors and thus off-limits to dogs?

    February 16, 2013

The carpool sounds good to me. When do you plan to leave, and when do you figure you'll be coming back?

We have made this change due to a conversation with the Nature Center. Unfortunately this was the only date and time they were able to give us when we could actually take the maple sirip tour.
