Hike/Camp Turkey Run State Park

Marie's phone number is[masked]-1596.  "You'll marvel at the natural geologic wonders of this beautiful park as you hike along its famous trails. Nestled along State Road 47 southwest of Crawfordsville, the park offers the chance to explore deep, sandstone ravines, walk along stands of aged forests, and enjoy the scenic views along Sugar Creek."

The plan for this trip is to drive down Friday Night and camp at Shades Campground, 7751 s 890 west, waveland Indiana. We have reserved and prepaid for spots 25, 26 and 27. It is wooded so plenty of trees for hammocks. There are bathrooms and showers but no electricity. The total cost for 3 sites for both nights is $100 with tax. Please come prepared to pay your share which will be divided amongst the number of participants. We will camp Friday night, hike Saturday and camp Saturday night then leave Sunday morning after stopping for breakfast somewhere. I believe a few of us have decided to visit nearby park, Shades, on Sunday after breakfast before heading home.

Participants can choose to come down and meet us for just hiking or camping for either nights or both.

Since this trip is car camping. For gear you will simply need a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (for under your sleeping bag to cushion you from the ground and keep you warm) a cookset (to heat water and cook your meals), silverware, food to eat and I recommend everyone have some water to drink (and smaller bottles to carry while we are hiking) If you are borrowing or buying a new tent please set it up beforehand so that you know how to set it up and ensure that you have all the parts. For clothes, you will have more fun if you are warm and dry so wear comfortable clothes that will dry quickly and you may want to have a rain poncho or coat, just in case. Some good shoes (hiking boots or tennis shoes) will keep your feet comfortable.

I will be bringing my cook stove, little grill and we will probably have a fire at night.

Costs for this trip would simply be gas if you are in a carpool and your share of any campground fees. Campsites allow for a maximum of 6 people per site so if alot of people attend we may have to have more then one.

Hi Marie - would you please bring another tent (if you still have it available) just in case if the one I have is too small for me and my 14-year old?

We will be leaving from Normal about 4:30 on Friday and coming back after the hike on Sat. If anyone would like a ride, please let me know.

    September 26, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Valeria, I think both Chris and I are bringing all of our available tents. I have a one person, a 4 person and will be using my new two person. Chris has a couple 4 person ones (I think) We should have you covered with no problems!

Hi everyone! I just recently joined this group. I have not been to any gear meeting or any back packing trip before. I am pretty new in back packing. I think this trip might be a good start for me since it is not backpacking. I do not have any Hike/Camp tools such as tent, etc. (Many Thanks Marie for mentioning all those here which I did not have any clue). I will try to buy them or borrow them before the trip. I am also looking for car pooling from Peoria. looking forward to hear from you.

Hi, I am new to the area. I would like to explore this close peace of land. I do not have a car so I would like to carpool with someone if possible. I live in Champaign, which is not a trouble since it is on the way!

Hi - I would love to join and spend time in the nature. That weekend is open for me. I don't think that i know anyone, but excited to get to know you. I went camping a really long time ago. What kind of tent do you suggest that I buy? And do you plan to have a quick get together before the trip itself?

    September 2, 2013

    • Marie

A sleeping pad goes under your sleeping bag and cushions you from the ground (also you will get cold without one) A cook set and set of silverware would be what you eat on and heat water in. Jim has regular gear meetings for backpacking and you might want to plan to attend one. But I have an old cookset and pad I can bring for you. If your neighbor gives you a tent you might want to set it up a few times so that you know how to do it and have all the parts.

Excellent idea about trying out to set up a tent! It all makes sense. Thank you, Marie. Please let me borrow a pad and a cook set then. I just saw that I missed a gear meeting which I would have for sure attended.

      September 3, 2013

Just to let everyone know, some of us are planning to hike the nearby park, Shades, before we head home Sunday afternoon.

    September 3, 2013

  • Tammie

I am new to this group and have not been camping in a while. Will there be a list of needed or suggested items posted for this meet-up? Also, I have a seven seat mini-van if anyone is interested in carpooling from Bloomington.

    August 24, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Tammie, for this trip we wil be "car camping" and hiking. You will need a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, food, water, something to cook in, utinsels to eat with. For clothes, non-cotton clothes and good walking shoes. Jim has regular gear meetings but we will not be backpacking this trip so you just need what will allow you to be comfortable and have fun. Let me know what gear you have and I might have things you can borrow if needed.

      August 25, 2013

    • Tammie

Thanks for the information Marie. I am pretty sure that I have everything that I will need but thanks for the offer. That was very sweet of you. Take Care.

For whomever chooses camping sites - please look for good hammock trees. We will be bringing two camping hammocks with us. Thanks! :D

Marie, I have been to the Turkey Run State Park before and I like it very much. I would like to attend this trip but still subject to change.
