Face to Face – A workshop for better understanding makeup artistry

The February event for the PGPG is a unique approach to understanding the world of makeup artistry and glamour. Because the talents of our MUA’s and other supporting artists are so important with making a good image, this event will offer several MUA’s the chance to lead a class on their specific approach to makeup artistry.

The presenting MUA’s will each have one model to be their canvas, allowing them both to create any image that they feel highlights their strengths as an MUA (i.e. cart blanche on creativity). They will do this, however, in front of the group, so that the audience can see the entire evolution from start to finish. Discussion about MUA techniques and topics will be encouraged throughout the process, in order to give things more of an informal feel, and allow everyone to share ideas and techniques. When the MUA’s have completed working on their respective model, the attending photographers will have the opportunity to photograph them, giving both the MUAs and models added images for their portfolios.

This event is open to anyone wanting to learn what makes mua’s tick, and space is limited. Please grab a slot if you are interested. Extra chairs will be set up for the watch and learn portion, and several shooting pods will be ready once the models are finished.

As an added perk, we will be giving away a few copies of the book "The Makeup Artist Handbook" by Gretchen Davis. Focal Press is a great sponsor, and their book selection is very broad. All members get a 30% discount when ordering, so please check their link (see sponsor section) if you are looking to build your photography or media library. Most of their books are available in print or e-book format.

And...we will have one BlackRapid camera sling to give out to one lucky photographer who signs up. This is a $60+ value of itself, and if you have not yet seen these being used, you will likely want one when you do. And you could win one just for attending the event...

Also...giving away a copy of the Photographer's Legal Guide by Carolyn Wright (electronic copy) to one of the signed up participants.

As always, a very friendly helpful bunch and the whole event was great great fun! I enjoyed getting to see the MUA's work in action and take pictures of the entire process from the beginning to the end. This event was a bit crowded at times, but watching the MUA's was the real intent of the workshop. The pictures were just the added bonus.

A little to crowded around the shooting areas, but I got some good shots and met a lot of new nice people. Good new models to work with too!

This was a fantastic workshop. Getting to see the MUAs start their work, then their work in progress to the completed look. And the shooting opportunities were many with different looks and backgrounds. The MUAs did great work and the models were all great to work with. I would have hated missing this one. And thanks to Albert for putting this together and those who stepped in to help make this work!

With so many cancellations at the last minute, this event was on the brink. But thanks to Annette, Laurie, Netty, Jillian, and Maggie, we had stellar models with extremely positive attitudes to photograph. The tremendous skills of Frances, Ronni, & Tina were put to the test, and they shined in front of a sold out group. They deserve exceptional kudos, as they helped to make this event hit the mark. Special thanks to Diane and Billy for so much effort with helping to set up, take down, and coordinate. And of course, the entire group that came out to see what made makeup artists tick. Many new faces today, along with some familiar, and much activity in the studio. These models also raised the bar by showing up with no makeup in order to be worked on in front of the group. It is this driver-personality that helps them each to be a success story. The MUAs were brave for being new to the PGPG while still performing their craft in front of the entire group. It was a very inspirational day.

Are you looking for additional models? I'm interested in getting started, but not sure where to begin!

    February 21, 2012

  • AGH

The model list is full at present, and I do have one other model who is a backup if I need more. You can wait to see if someone cancels (model wise), or sign up and experience the workshop, and even shoot if you bring a camera.
