Photiesta, the First

*****

July’s event for the PGPG is the first of an occasional series of photo shoot/house party events. To kick off this run, we will be using an excellent residence in the West Chester area as our studio for the day. The location will be disclosed to those that officially RSVP, but for logistic purposes, please use West Chester as your ‘destination point’. We have a very interesting batch of models lining up, with makeup services being provided by the amazing Tina Kane. Updates to the list will be made as they develop, as there are more models to list, and more surprises to include.

For gear considerations, several Alien Bees will be available, with one light in each location, but bringing your own gear is highly encouraged. Please consider being mobile, so that each room/area can be navigated as people switch out. Both models and photographers will be rotated throughout the day, helping to give variety to each setting, model, and photographer. Props and accents are encouraged.

For the house social portion, there will be various foods available, along with a band playing live acoustic music. Attendees are encouraged to bring a simple dish or their own drink of choice. If the numbers increase enough, this will be modified to accommodate the group size.

We have a prize or two to give out to some lucky photographer's that sign up:

1. A brand new copy of the Focal Press Encyclopedia of Photography (http://www.focalpress.com/books/photography/the_focal_encyclopedia_of_photography.aspx?terms=encyclopedia), a $99.95 value, will one of the door prizes. Members do get a substantial discount on Focal Press books, so please check the sponsor link section.

2. A Black Rapid SnapR 10 (a combination bag-sling strap-hand strap, retailing for $29.95) will be another prize to one lucky photographer who RSVP’s for the event. For info on this item and other interesting products, please visit http://www.blackrapid.com/product/camera-strap/snapr10/. Also, I'll be helping Black Rapid with a new promotion, and will share that with the photographers who RSVP.

3. Zoolander on DVD; yep, get your Blue Steel on...one lucky person will win a copy of a true classic movie.

Lastly…punch and pie…

I'll check on a venue...I just saw the latest comments, so I'll find a spot for a 'comparing notes session'. Also, the link to the 2nd album is at http://www.meetup.com/The-Philadelphia-Glamour-Photography-Group/photos/9979662/.

Maybe those interested could meet a week or two after postings to discuss various photos. We could even discuss ways to improve some of the photos via  post processing.

If only a few are interested, we could meet somewhere a review/ discuss the photos on IPads and Laptops.

I would also be interested in having a meeting to discuss various gear and techniques used at this shoot. Perhaps we could have a "show and tell" where the photographer can show their best shots with each model and explain how the shots were set up, exposure, post processing techniques, etc. Needed: a room with a projector and some chairs for all of us!

  • David

Thanks for the extra space Albert!
    ...

@Jim- your a gentlemen... appreciate the kind words. Also, your idea about possibly having photographers getting together to discuss their various techniques... I'd be up for that if there was a handful of folks interested.

  • Jim O.

Thanks Albert. I think the First Photiesta far exceeded anyone's expectations, which is wonderful.

I wonder if any of the group would like to get together from time-to-time to discuss some of their photos. What were the elements that made a photograph so successful. Things such as the method of lighting, composition and post processing. Basically, to discuss this art we call photography and the various elements that go into the creation of our photographs.

    Just a thought.

Oh shit...and yes, I'm typing an expletive....I just saw that there WAS 500 photos...and now there is not.....I did not know that meetup.com limited the # of photos in an album. So, I'll just make another album. Really guys, one day, I hope to migrate this group to something OUTSIDE of meetup.com, but that is still in the works. Give me a few minutes...I just saw these posts anyways, so I'll make another album...

    July 30, 2012

  • Jim O.

David- your postings are so beautiful, I’m glad that I was able to give you some space. Your photos really are special. Composition, exposure, processing- all very, very professional.

    1 · July 30, 2012

  • David

Hey Jim… very kind of you to step right up and free up some space. I guess we'll have to wait to hear from our fearless leader to see if there is an alternative like an overflow album… which would be great!

    July 30, 2012

  • Chuck A.

I say let's do an overflow album, cause a lot of material will get thrown out and the model's will lose out.

    July 30, 2012

  • Jim O.

I just freed up 40 spaces in the album. I never intended to b greedy. Just really excited about the great models we had working with us.

    July 30, 2012

  • FWM

I was going to keep quiet about it, but......I have seen other group leaders, form a second album to capture the over run/flow of pictures.

    July 30, 2012

  • Jim O.

Albert, if I delete several photos will others be able to continue posting?

    July 30, 2012

  • Jim O.

Albert, another possibility might be that, when the album becomes full, you might ask some of us heavy posters to make choices and remove some. But, before removal, give the models a heads-up. I didn't realize that there was a limit to the album size.

    July 30, 2012

  • Jim O.

Albert, is it possible to increase album size for these shoots?
Our models work all day for photos and deserve as many quality images as possible. I imagine the more quality photos we can provide to the models, the more anxious they and others will be to participate in our events. The upcoming event looks huge and an album of 500 doesn't sound adequate. Just my thoughts.

    July 30, 2012

  • David

So I was planning on sharing a handful of favorites but when I went to upload the other day, I saw that the album was full... 500 images already. If everyone put up their best 20-25 shots, I'd think we be able to stuff it in but I guess with no cap, some shared more than others. Is there a way to get more room in this album?

Thanks to everyone for a fun day. I wish I shot with more models and met more photogs but I will have to save that for the next one. Thanks everyone for your generous comments. :)

I'd drive far beyond "West Chester" for another opportunity like this. It was very well organized. The MUA's did beautiful work. The Models were amazing. Fellow Photogs were helpful, assisting one another, sharing insights and gear. The location had plenty of versatility and for the Host and family to open up nearly every corner of their beautiful home while directing traffic, catering, multi-tasking, etc, was amazing to watch. I met some new faces and look forward to doing something like this again sooner than later.

    July 24, 2012

  • AGH

You all are just crushing it. This album is wonderful. Many, many great shots. New and familiar faces, new and familiar photogs, new and familiar muas....this is just amazing.

    July 24, 2012

  • Ted

What a great event this was. The host is always making sure photographers have a model to shoot with and vice versa. The models are friendly and easy to work with. And the house is AMAZING, everywhere you look is a set to shoot. Definitely one of the best photo events I have been to.

    July 24, 2012

  • AGH

Much can be said, but the brunt of thanks goes to Lara Graham, who was an excellent hostess, and to Tina and Ronni for being such hard working MUA's. The models that attended, they are tops because they were there, they looked absolutely amazing, and they did amazing work. The photogs all worked well with the chaos, and yet again, it's the camaraderie of this group that helps to set it apart from the rest. Special thanks also to Tyler Graham and Sean Behr for their assistant help, and to Bill Muller for representing Motive Cosmetics, AND to Jim and Tito of Tito Grooves, a wonderful acoustic team. The event photo album so far is absolutely amazing; everyone is hitting the mark, and that is exciting to see.

This being my first Meetup Event, I have to say that my expectations for every meetup I attend after this are really high. I had an amazing time!!!! This was my first time shooting portraits and I could not have done it with out the help of everyone that attended. Thank you!!!!!

Well, for my first try at a meetup with the group, that was a fantastic time! A little tiring, but a lot of fun- thanks hugely to Albert & the hostess/the guys running around making sure everyone was doing well.
Looking forwards to the next one, and to seeing the images that come out of this! :)

I can't attend the August event and I realize the irony of it considering my last post! :)

It was a great shoot. I wish I had been able to work with more of you. There will other shoots so just make sure you keep coming out! To photographers: PLEASE TAG THE MODEL! I and others would like to know who the person(s) in the photo is/are!

    July 22, 2012

  • FWM

I was a bit skeptical, but EVERY ONE was so FANTASTIC, the models, the makeup people, the organizer, and especial thanks to the home owner who graciously opened up her home to us crazy people LOL

    July 22, 2012

The hosts and Albert were outstanding and all of the models and makeup artists were such an honor to work with. This group is THE Meetup group in Philadelphia to belong to. I look forward to other meetups and will share my photos on this site. Thank you to the pros and emerging pros who shared with me and to those that I shared with, I hope that you had a chance to learn something new!

Thank you Albert and the Graham family, for an excellent well-organized shoot. Had a great time working with our lovely models, friendly photographers and makeup artists. My only regret was that I had to leave early for a family event and could not shoot all the models. Very pleased with the photos.

Nicely decorated house for photo shoot.

Good models - some experienced ones who required little coaching. Nice to meet fellow photographers who know what they are doing!

What a great meetup. Laura was a wonderful host, the models were beautiful and friendly, the photographers were very professional. This was truly a great day. Even the weather gave us beautiful natural light all day long. Albert really put together a day that was better than I could have imagined. the MUA made the models look flawless. Not much Photoshop work needed for these models.
