Rock Mechanics of Fracking

Tim Bechtel : Enviroscan Inc. & Univ. of Pennsylvania will give a talk on science behind fracking.

This talk will summarize the lifecycle of an unconventional natural gas extraction well (fracking), and pause to explain in detail the rock mechanics and process of hydraulically fracturing rocks (fracing or frac'ing) to allow hydrocarbons to flow. And it is almost certainly not what you think.

This is not an advocacy talk for any side in current geo-enviro-political debates, but a factual explanation of the process that will allow the listener to monitor or engage in debates armed with good information.

So if you are coming armed with swords to battle fracking, find another target.

If you want to understand what really goes on, please do come.

Talk starts at 6, but lets meet early to grab good seats and get a bit to eat/drink from the HH menu.

It was pretty good, but sometimes it was a little hard to follow.

As per organizers, lot of people plan to attend. So come early to get seats. I hope to get there by 5:20. Our meetup group usually takes the first 3 long tables closest to screen. And I will have meetup signs on the tables that we manage to secure. See photo for past meetup group seating arrangement.

I can get train, arriving at 30th Street at 5:09, which should get me to Cafe around 5:20. Will look for group then and help in getting seats if needed...

I can leave work and get there a bit earlier if it would be helpful from a get good seats point of view?

That would be great. Thanks. If I am in the city and can make it, I usually get there around 5:20.

I grew up in Susquehanna County where all the fracking is going on, so particularly interested in this topic.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
