4th of July Vegan Picnic in the park

Clark Park in University City/West Philly is large, with a playground, basketball court, lovely shade trees, and lots of people watching. Since it's tough to determine the best picnic spot right now, let's meet at the 43rd and Baltimore Avenue entrance, (not the Chester Ave entrance), right by the big Clark Park sign. We will then pick a spot to toss some blankets or maybe even snag some benches. Bring prepared food (no cooking or bbq here), blankets, chairs, kids, dogs, etc. The #34 trolley stops right at the corner of 43rd and Baltimore. The #13 trolley stops right at the corner of 43rd and Chester (1 block south of Baltimore), so take either from center city or further in West Philly. Ummm. How do I find you guys in a park full of people when I've never met you before, (though I tried on ice cream night, ha ha)?

Gina did a superb job of planning and executing the event. Extremely well organized from start to finish. The group was very friendly and inclusive (thanks for welcoming my friend), the venue was nice, and the cuisine was terrific, as always. It was fun to go to the South Street Bridge afterwards to admire the fireworks. Thanks, Gina, bravo! You are such a good event planner. Ever consider directing an event venue in real life? ;)

Practical question ... is someone going to bring paper plates/plastic silverware or should we all bring our own?

a second note. if possible, please label your dish so that everyone knows what it is. please remember to bring something vegan. if you need to know if a certain ingredient is vegan or not, ask here. someone will surely know.

looks like it will rain in the morning but will definitely taper off in the afternoon. a note about the location---there are a few tables and chairs that i will try to snag if i can. they're in a gravel area. otherwise, please prepare to bring your own chair, blanket, table if you're so inclined, etc. and we will set up on the grass picnic-style. we will meet at the park's sign at the 43rd and baltimore ave entrance. if you miss us, call me at[masked]-3705. i have no idea how long folks will want to stick around, but some of us plan to see fireworks afterward, so feel free to join us!

Fireworks at South St. Bridge afterwards, OK?

    3 · June 27

    • yaffa

1,000 times more practical.. not as romantic, though. But that definitely the better choice. Great idea!

    • Adrienne

Yes, fireworks after! The view from South St. Bridge is great, but I guess the parking lot view is more practical.

...what happens if it rains? Oh I see, thanks Maria, so will we still meet at the entrance...sorry I hearing everywhere that rain is eminent.

I'll bring homemade vegan wings (baked, not fried). I like Gina's fireworks idea. Is anybody interested in a music jam in the park?

I am new to Philly. I would like to come, but I walk with a cane/walker and my car is not working. Will there be some sort of trolley running on the 4th of July from 50th us to 43rd?

    June 29

    • Mary M.

I see you are saying the trolley is running...

      June 29

    • Maria

Mary, the trolley lines will be running on a Sunday schedule.

If it rains we can run to my place. It's very close to the park.

I was thinking of having a vegetarian picnic in Washington Square Park for lunch time, just like we did last year. That would allow us to watch the Independence Day parade through Old City first, then go and grab some food from nearby eateries and pitch a picnic in Washington Square. Would people be interested in it? We would still also go to Clark Park for vegan potluck in the evening. A full day of vegetarian/vegan community events!! :)

Might be too much to do two picnics...thinking we'll do Clark Park and then find some fireworks :-)

himanshu, i like the idea of both events but i won't be able to get together earlier in the day. have fun if you do, though.
