Dinner and Ghost Tour of Society Hill/Old City

  • September 29, 2012 · 6:00 PM

There is a new Szechuan/fusion restaurant at 12th and Chestnut called Spice 28. It is a pretty awesome new place with lot of vegetarian options on the menu. We will have dinner there on Saturday, September 29th, at 6:00pm. Then, we will proceed to check out the ghost tour of Old City. You can check out the reviews at:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/spice-28-philadelphia
and
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-insider/Spice-28-is-open-at-13th-and-Chestnut.html

I have worked out a group discount with the ghost tour. And if we get 15 or more to sign-up, they will close the tour for others and make it private, just for us! The discounted price is $13 (regular is $17). You will have to call in advance and reserve your own ticket(s). Please call:
[masked]
And mention our meetup group and the date/time (Sept 29th, 9:30pm tour) to receive the discount. There is an earlier tour at 7:30pm but I think "ghosts" will come out more at the later hour. :) For more details, please see their web site:
http://www.ghosttour.com/philadelphia.html

The tour lasts at most 1.5 hours, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Let's hope for perfect weather, with only a nip in the Fall air.

The restaurant is located at 1228 Chestnut St, where we will meet for dinner at 7:00pm. If you are skipping dinner, you can meet us directly at 9:30pm at the starting point of the ghost tour, which is at the Signers Garden, at the corner of 5th and Chestnut St.

It was good. If I hadn't read about it on the Meetup page, I would never have known about it and would have missed an enjoyable evening!

Tour guide was awesome, a lot of fun - an excellent history tour.

Kat and Brett-- your answers don't show up for some reason. Do you plan on coming for dinner and the tour, or just the tour or just the dinner? Please let me know ASAP. Thanks! :)

yes I will be there for the ghost tour; cant make it to dinner; i hope thats ok

No problem. We had people on waiting list who can now come for the dinner, which is the bottleneck-- we can have plenty more for the ghost tour only segment.

Depending on what train I take back from my job that day, I may not be able to get to the restaurant until about 6:30. Is that too late?

    September 25, 2012

We will have ordered by then, but you're welcome to come and you can always have any leftovers packed up to go.

Ok thanks- hopefully I can catch the earlier train.

Uh, I am going to dress up like a ghoul. I just wanted to let you all know so you're not super duper scared by my presence. Its going to involve black glitter eyeshadow. Muhuhahahahahahaha!!

Since you're only coming for the ghost tour, bringing along a guest is fine. More the merrier! Are they going to dress up too?! :)

Since we got moved up one hour for dinner, from 7:00pm to 6:00pm, and the ghost tour won't move its time (they are busy earlier in the evening), we will have some extra time after dinner and before the ghost tour appointed time of 9:30pm. One idea was to seek out vegan desserts place nearby, such as Vegan Tree on South Street. Something closer might be sorbets (vegan) and gelato at Capogiro, the best-rated dessert place in town and just around the block from Spice. Any other ideas?

Ben, the part-owner at Spice, notified me today that 7:00pm isn't doable on a Saturday night since our group is so large, but he could accommodate us at 6:00pm. So I apologize for this change and ask that you make note of it and if this is not doable due to time change, then change your RSVP. I will talk to Ghost Tour and try to get the time moved up by an hour, to 8:30pm. If that can't happen, then we may have an hour or so between dinner and the tour in which you are free to do whatever you'd like; I can try to line up something for us to do in between.

So far, Ghost Tour tells me five of you have purchased the discounted tickets by calling in, as requested.

I kept the guest limit to +2, but if you have more people who would like to come with you, I could make that change so let me know.

Sounds good, Sara. But I will have to check to see whether this restaurant has true vegan options or only vegetarian ones. Wouldn't want to disappoint any attendees with dashed expectations.

    • Himanshu

So perhaps Stan+1 should be cancelled?

      September 18, 2012

    Himanshu -
Do you know when we need to call and order our tickets by?

    September 18, 2012

    • Himanshu

Good question; there wasn't a deadline set in my discussion with the tour operator. I guess as soon as you know for sure that you will attend, go ahead and buy the ticket.

I'm going to try to make this. Is there any intrest in doing the terror behind the walls for those who may want to still? My daughter has been begging to go to this and a group would be so much more fun (and maybe a tiny bit less scary).

    September 18, 2012

    • Himanshu

Amy, I'm looking into that. There are several dates where they are accepting group reservations-- see the discussion thread on page 2.

Terror Behind the Walls: Special group rates (20 people or more) are available on 13 nights only: September 21, 22, 28, and 29; October 5, 11, 16, 17, 23, and 31; and November 1, 2, and 3. Tickets for groups on these evenings are $20.00* per person. That’s 50% off the box office price!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
