Next Philosophers' Corner presentation

The human mind/body is perhaps the most complex thing in the universe…

Can we Understand Consciousness and Free-will? And Why?

Précis

The explanation of free-will is an elusive topic.  By approaching the topic from various perspectives, including those of philosophy, mathematics, evolutionary biology, cybernetic systems theory, information technology, neuroscience, psychology and sociology, we will endeavour to slowly zero in on a more complete explanation and thus open a new framework for further investigation. Any proposed explanation should be in agreement with research to date, testable, falsifiable and as simple as possible.  It should free us from the current paradigm if that paradigm is not leading to new insights and discoveries. My simple motivation is to help you access your deepest potential…

My thoughts (to share with all), come back again to understand "freewill" as "self awareness" , our mind should not define us; it should be used as a tool, that it actually is, by not doing so it creates an unhealthy ego-system that has [or will probably have a malevolent] control over us. If we take charge of our mind or ego we take charge of our reward system. Our current EGO system may in some ways be harmful to us, hence creating the pain and misery in our lives resulting from our own convictions+ actions+social agreements, moral and codes...

Hey Löeby, I can't disagree with anything here...

..(cont) I did mention a couple of books as I was referring to "SELF AWARENESS"-"The Book of the 4 Agreements" or the 5 Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz, you may not agree(?) with everything but you will find a true meaning of "free-will", you can read it in a day and it will be useful all your life.. also in terms of our understanding of the Universe, being incomplete, immense, constantly evolving and the mystery of many unknown dimensions, its relativity, etc no one would be better than CARL SAGAN (as Alec quoted)to explain complex scientific information in a philosophical and simple way, perhaps my favourite one is "Billions and Billions, there are a couple more too : "COSMOS" and "BLUE PALE DOT" all excellent!

Hi Enrique, yes there is heaps more that could have been said. E.g. we didn't speak of the downside of the idea that the social environment makes us, completes us, and sometimes pushes our psych buttons. We could have talked about how ordinary people have acquiesced and participated unthinkingly in all kinds of horrible atrocities in history that they wouldn't have done without the influence of the group. I tried to keep it positive...
