About Bagdad Cafe:
"Bavarian tourist Jasmin fights with her husband in the Mojave Desert and storms off to a nearby café-motel where she develops a prickly friendship with the owner, Brenda. In time, they turn the decrepit cafe into a local hot spot, and Jasmin becomes a popular entertainer. The characters who collect at the café, including Hollywood-set painter Rudi, form an odd sort of family in this quirky film."
Jasmin is abruptly abandoned in the desert by her incensed husband and must survive in a strange place in a foreign land. As protagonist of the film, she provides a refreshing perspective on the desert community and, by extension, on American culture and the human experience. She demonstrates the vigor and optimism that immigrants so often do and reminds us how powerful and transforming it can be to really be where you are, wherever you are.
After screening the film, we may have some discussion, interest and time permitting.
