Practice our visual storytelling

I'm looking for 2-4 people to join me next sunday. I'm interested in developing a weekly group where the sole purpose is to go through the book "Master Shots" shot by shot and get familiar with some of the techniques they introduce to tell visual stories. It's basically a step by step shot bible that i'd like to imbibe. It's a good book. Every time I've done a shot from it, I've learned more about filmmaking and believe it will help my future work as a director. Plus, it's practice without having money to make a short.

The idea is, we will rotate. 2 in front of the camera, 2 behind. Everyone gets to practice. Every exercise in the book requires at least a camera person and 2 actors. But 2 camera people, one assisting (focus) and one moving the camera would be cool. Each shot is a choreography. Everyone hitting their cue to pull off some really cool magic straight from Ridley Scott, Hitchcock and Fincher movies.

I feel like we could get through 6-10 shots per session, maybe more depending on our energy level and how well we work together. Of course as we get better and start to piece the technique apart from the recipes, the shots could become more elaborate. It's always interesting to discuss and watch progress and this summer seems like a great time to do that.

I watched Rushmore again last night and noticed how few shots Wes Anderson uses to convey his unique style, which he improves upon but really remains faithful to 16 years later in Moonrise Kingdom.

Building DIY sliders, steadicams and jibs could be a part of it but I'm more interested in smooth hand held shots. I think we can become just as proficient hand holding most shots and save a lot of time. I have a DSLR. I'm hoping this group could turn into a regular crew for upcoming narrative work and would also be into practicing with sound, lighting, editing and after effects in a similar weekly meeting. I don't believe we have to pay thousands of dollars at NWFS or any film school to learn this stuff and improve our work.

And while I enjoy talking about film and filmmaking or networking (whatever that means.) I'm more in the mood to get down to shooting. Which is the most fun part, I think. So perhaps this is an homage to my film school days or what I wished they could've been like.

So, I'm looking for relatively inexperienced filmmakers. People who know they have a lot to learn and aren't going to namedrop or try to impress anyone. Collaborative, happy, energetic people in their 20's or 30's who believe their films are lacking in cinematic style and could get off the tripod more and want to learn and teach together and would be down to meet on a regular day each week for a few hours at a time to knock this book out.
